AceShowbiz – Taraji P. Henson and Lee Daniels are among the stars who will appear in a series of Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences YouTube panels discussing race annd gender in filmmakers.
The “Academy Dialogues: It Starts With Us” has been launched following a July (20) panel featuring Whoopi Goldberg and activist lawyer Bryan Stevenson, and will feature virtual panels for members and the public, as a part of its Academy Aperture 2025 equity and inclusion initiative.
As well as Henson and “The Butler” filmmaker Daniels, the events will also feature the likes of Delroy Lindo, producers Lisa Cortes and Debra Martin Chase, writer Tarell Alvin McCraney, and director Lulu Wang.
The Academy’s Executive Vice President for Member Relations and Awards, Lorenza Munoz, says “With our ‘Academy Dialogues’ series, the Academy is creating a space for our members – and the public – to talk about inclusion in a way that is timely, relevant and allows for a meaningful exchange on how to bring systemic change to Hollywood.”
“These conversations may be uncomfortable for some, but they are necessary to broaden the stories that are getting told and increase opportunities for those who have been excluded.”
The next panel will take place on 27 August, with Daniels and “Moonlight” screenwriter McCraney among those discussing what it’s like to be black and gay in the film industry. Henson and Lindo will take part in a town hall focused on the Academy’s Black membership and the challenges to representation and inclusion in the industry next month (Sep20).
Other discussions in the series, which runs until October include a panel on the erasure of Latinos in Hollywood, gender parity, colour-conscious casting, as well as the challenges faced by indigenous and Asian filmmakers.
All the panels will be available on the Oscars YouTube channel – with the first dialogue featuring Goldberg and Stevenson, made available to watch on Thursday (20Aug20).

    WENN/Avalon

The ‘Empire’ actress is one of the favorite candidates to portray the late ‘I Have Nothing’ singer in an upcoming true-story movie in the works with Clive Davis.
    Jan 26, 2020
AceShowbiz – Taraji P. Henson could be set to channel late diva Whitney Houston on the big screen, if the singer’s sister-in-law Pat gets her way.
Pat is working closely with record executive Clive Davis, who played a key role in the “I Have Nothing” star’s rise to success, on the upcoming project, and told TMZ her hopes for the planned movie.
While the film is in its early stages, she teased the pair are considering several “options” to play the leading role, before adding, “I love Taraji P. Henson.”
She added, “Taraji is my girl.”
Pat was also full of praise for Clive, who she described as a “wonderful person.”
“Let me just say this… We have a wonderful relationship,” she said, adding, “Anything that we can do for him… it’s done. ”
Whitney passed away at the age of 48 after she was found unconscious in a bathtub on 11 February, 2012. The Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office listed her death as an “accident” caused by drowning and the “effects of atherosclerotic heart disease and cocaine use,” while toxicology results discovered substances including Benadryl and Xanax in her system.

Taraji P. Henson Confirms 'Empire' Spin-Off Is in the Works

    NBC

The Cookie Lyon depicter plays coy when asked in a television interview about the hip-hop drama spin-off rumors but she teases that ‘everything’s coming up roses.’
    Jan 25, 2020
AceShowbiz – Actress Taraji P. Henson has hinted her stint on “Empire” is far from over amid reports suggesting she has landed her own spin-off.
The star portrays family matriarch Cookie Lyon on Lee Daniels’ hit hip-hop drama series, which is currently in the midst of its sixth and final season, but recent rumours have indicated Henson will continue playing her larger-than-life character in a new side project – and she isn’t denying the claims.
Asked about the possibility of fronting her own Empire spin-off, she coyly told U.S. breakfast show “Today”, “I mean, it could be, I don’t know. Some things I can’t talk about.”
Henson then tried to change the topic of conversation, looking over to a bunch of flowers on a table next to her and remarking, “Ooh, these are pretty. What is this?”
But when guest presenter Maria Shriver remarked, “I think she just said something,” Henson tried to downplay her actions, insisting, “I didn’t say anything, I said the flowers are (pretty).”
The Oscar nominee then dropped her biggest hint yet, adding, “I said everything’s coming up roses!” as she exaggerated a wink at the camera.
    “I didn’t say anything, I didn’t!” she quipped.

Henson’s interview emerges weeks after Fox network boss Michael Thorn admitted the topic had been discussed with “Empire” creators Daniels and Danny Strong – although there were no firm plans.
“We have talked about it but there has been no pitch, and there has been no deals,” Thorn said. “Would we like to keep Taraji on our air for as long as possible? Of course!”
