The horror film, which marks the directorial debut of Alison Brie’s actor husband, grabs over $420,800 from 251 select theaters and drive-ins across the country.

AceShowbiz – Dave Franco’s directorial debut has topped the U.S. box office.
Horror movie “The Rental”, which stars the actor/filmmaker’s wife Alison Brie, grabbed over $420,800 (£328,900) over its launch weekend from 251 theatres.
“I have been truly fortunate to have a partner in IFC Films whose agility and creativity during this time has allowed us to have this incredible moment for our film,” Franco says in a statement. “As a first time filmmaker, I’m beyond grateful to the audiences who supported us this weekend.”
IFC Films executive vice-president of film acquisitions and production, Arianna Bocco, tells Deadline, “We acquired this movie when we already knew there was a (cinema) shutdown, and when we pitched Dave… and everyone our plan, we weren’t going to let the virus control (it). We’re going to do the best that we can in a hybrid drive-in, PVOD (premium video on demand) model. We treated the film as we would with any other title… doing press. We had the first pop-up premiere in LA, and we thought outside the box. The one goal was to get as many people to see the movie and the result was best case scenario, and we couldn’t be more thrilled.”
Bocco went on to praise drive-in theaters, where the film was a huge hit.
Classic films “The Karate Kid”, “The Goonies” and “Jurassic Park” also enjoyed a big weekend at drive-ins and select cinemas, while Vinnie Jones and Malcolm McDowell’s action film “The Big Ugly” comes in fifth on the new box office list with a debut weekend of $150,000 (£118,000).

  • Dave Franco and Alison Brie Make Use of Coronavirus Lockdown to Write Rom-Com

    WENN

When speaking about his collaboration with his actress wife, the ‘Now You See Me’ star also talks about how invaluable it was for him to have her starring in his directorial debut film.
    Jul 16, 2020
AceShowbiz – Dave Franco and his actress wife Alison Brie has spent the coronavirus lockdown writing a romantic comedy.
The “Now You See Me” star, who recently made his directorial debut by overseeing his wife’s movie “The Rental”, explains he and Brie were bored one day and decided to see if they could recreate a classic, like “When Harry Met Sally” or “Pretty Woman”.
“It’s a genre that we both love, but when we looked at the landscape of rom-coms over the past decade, it feels like the bar is set really low,” Dave tells Variety. “There’s a trend where rom-coms have an overly bright aesthetic and the concepts are really silly and the acting isn’t grounded.”
“We looked back on classics like ‘When Harry Met Sally’, ‘Sleepless in Seattle’, ‘Pretty Woman’… When you look at those films, you remember how grounded they are and how great the acting is.”
And if their romantic comedy takes shape, Dave would love to direct Alison again.
“She’s a unique actor in the way that she’s able to balance heavy drama with moments of levity, and it was just so comforting for me to have her there through the process (while I was making ‘The Rental’),” he adds.
“As a first-time director, there were moments where I would get in my head and start to doubt myself. It was invaluable to have her there to build me up when I needed to be, and to remind me that we were doing good work.”
The couple debuted their new film during a drive-in screening last month (June).

Dave Franco to Direct Wife Alison Brie in Directorial Debut

    WENN

The ‘Now You See Me’ actor is set to make his first foray into directing with a big-screen thriller titled ‘The Rental’ starring his own wife and Dan Stevens.
    Apr 12, 2020
AceShowbiz – Dave Franco is set to direct his wife Alison Brie for his first venture behind the camera.
The actor is set to make his filmmaking debut with the thriller “The Rental”, which will feature Brie, “Downton Abbey” ‘s Dan Stevens, Jeremy Allen White, and Sheila Vand.
Written by Franco and Joe Swanberg, the plot of the film follows two couples as they embark on a fun weekend getaway that turns sinister when secrets they’ve kept from one another begin to emerge.
“I’ve been wanting to direct a feature for a long time,” Franco tells Deadline. “As a viewer, there’s nothing I love more than a smart thriller. In writing and directing The Rental, I was inspired by films like Rosemary’s Baby, Martha Marcy May Marlene, and Hereditary, all of which elevate the genre beyond cheap jump scares.”
