    Anne Hathaway Promises to Do Better When Apologizing for 'The Witches' Disabilities Controversy

    The actress portraying the Grand High Witch in the movie expresses her remorse for the pain she caused to children with limb differences after Warner Bros. officials issued their apology.

    AceShowbiz – Anne Hathaway tries to make amends over the damaging portrayal of disability in “The Witches”. One day after Warner Bros. officials issued an apology to the disability community, the actress playing the Grand High Witch in the movie promised to do better as she expressed remorse for her involvement.
    The 37-year-old took to Instagram on Thursday, November 5 to share a video from Lucky Fin Project that raises awareness on children, individuals and families affected by limb differences. After thanking the nonprofit for the clip, she began addressing the issue, “I have recently learned that many people with limb differences, especially children, are in pain because of the portrayal of the Grand High Witch in The Witches.”
    “Let me begin by saying I do my best to be sensitive to the feelings and experiences of others not out of some scrambling PC fear, but because not hurting others seems like a basic level of decency we should all be striving for,” the wife of Adam Shulman continued. “As someone who really believes in inclusivity and really, really detests cruelty, I owe you all an apology for the pain caused.”

    “I am sorry. I did not connect limb difference with the GHW when the look of the character was brought to me; if I had, I assure you this never would have happened,” the Academy Award winner stressed. “I particularly want to say I’m sorry to kids with limb differences: now that I know better I promise I’ll do better. And I owe a special apology to everyone who loves you as fiercely as I love my own kids: I’m sorry I let your family down.”
    When concluding her apologetic statement, the Andrea Sachs of “The Devil Wears Prada” urged fans and followers to learn more about the issue at hand. “If you aren’t already familiar, please check out the @Lucky_Fin_Project (video above) and the #NotAWitch hashtag to get a more inclusive and necessary perspective on limb difference,” she stated.

    Anne’s apology came after Warner Bros. officials told Deadline that they were “deeply saddened to learn that our depiction of the fictional characters in ‘The Witches’ could upset people with disabilities.” They also “regretted any offense caused” by the film.

      Movie bosses at Warner Brothers release an apology to the disability community as they regret upsetting people with the depiction of the eponymous characters.

      AceShowbiz – Warner Bros. officials have issued an apology after prominent members of the disability community condemned the depiction of the eponymous characters in “The Witches”.
      In the movie, inspired by Roald Dahl’s children’s novel of the same name, Anne Hathaway’s character is shown with hands that are similar to the limb abnormality ectrodactyly, which is characterized by the absence of one or more central digits on the hand or foot.
      After figures including campaigners, Paralympians, and Paralympic Games organization officials took issue with the film, Warner Bros. bosses told Deadline they were “deeply saddened to learn that our depiction of the fictional characters in ‘The Witches’ could upset people with disabilities” and “regretted any offense caused.”
      “In adapting the original story, we worked with designers and artists to come up with a new interpretation of the cat-like claws that are described in the book,” they added.

      British Paralympic swimmer Amy Marren was one of the first to call out the studio for the imagery, while disability advocate Shannon Crossland stated on Instagram that the imagery in the film was “no way a reflection of the original novel written by Roald Dahl.”
      In the 1983 novel, the witches are said to have “square feet with no toes” and “claws instead of fingernails,” with Marren adding, “Is this the kind of message we want the next generation to receive. That having three fingers is a witch’s attribute?”
      “It is an extremely damaging portrayal,” she insisted. “Disability should NOT be associated with evil, abnormality, disgust, fear or monsters.”

      AceShowbiz – The first official trailer of “The Witches” has arrived to give a tease of the Grand High Witch’s menacing plans. In Rob Zemeckis’ take on Roald Dahl’s 1983 novel of the same name, Anne Hathaway plays the wicked witch who hates children.
      The trailer opens with glimpses of the life of a young boy (Jahzir Kadeem Bruno), who lives with his grandma (Octavia Spencer) after his parents passed away. Unfortunately, his seemingly normal life is about to be ruined by the arrival of Grand High Witch and her fellow witches to the town.
      Using a potion, the Grand High Witch turns children into mice. As The Boy among those falling victims to the witch’s spell, the tough but loving grandmother will stop at nothing to foil the witches’ evil plans.

      According to the official description of the movie, “reimagining Dahl’s beloved story for a modern audience, Zemeckis’s visually innovative film tells the darkly humorous and heartwarming tale of a young orphaned boy who, in late 1967, goes to live with his loving Grandma in the rural Alabama town of Demopolis. As the boy and his grandmother encounter some deceptively glamorous but thoroughly diabolical witches, she wisely whisks our young hero away to an opulent seaside resort. Regrettably, they arrive at precisely the same time that the world’s Grand High Witch has gathered her fellow cronies from around the globe-undercover-to carry out her nefarious plans.”
      Based on the book by Dahl, the screenplay is written by Zemeckis with Kenya Barris and Guillermo del Toro. Zemeckis is also producing, alongside Jack Rapke, del Toro, Alfonso Cuaron and Luke Kelly. Serving as executive producers are Jacqueline Levine, Marianne Jenkins, Michael Siegel, Gideon Simeloff and Cate Adams.
      Joining the cast are Stanley Tucci as Mr. Stringer, the hotel manager who unwittingly hosts the witches’ convention, Chris Rock as the Narrator, Kristin Chenoweth as a Mouse, Charles Edwards as Mr. Jenkins, and Morgana Robinson as Mrs. Jenkins among others.
      The movie was originally scheduled for a theatrical release this month, but was later pulled from schedule due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Warner Bros. has now announced that it will head straight to HBO Max on October 22 in the United States, just in time for Halloween. The film will head into theatres internationally beginning October 28.
