Elizabeth Perkins Says Tom Hanks Love Scene in Movie 'Big' Would Cause Uproar Today

    WENN

The ‘How to Live with Your Parents’ actress insists her suggestive scene with the ‘Saving Private Ryan’ actor would never be approved if the movie were made today.

    Apr 3, 2021

    AceShowbiz –
Elizabeth Perkins insists her love scene with Tom Hanks in “Big” would never be allowed today.

The actress played Hanks’ love interest in the 1988 comedy, in which a teenager lands his dream job for a toy company after exchanging bodies with an adult, and she tells Page Six there’s no way Hollywood bosses would have signed off on a scene that suggests Perkins’ character, Susan, fooled around with an underaged boy.

“We don’t see them having sex but he does take my shirt off,” she explains. “Actually, I take my shirt off and he touches my breast, then we cut to the elevator door opening and he’s got a big smile on his face. We never say, ‘Oh they slept together,’ but they definitely fooled around.”

“They wouldn’t have shown that at all (today). I think we’re in a different time (and) I’m totally on board with that… It was not even a consideration of ours at the time. It was not even something we broached or discussed on any level.”

Meanwhile, Elizabeth admits few people thought the film would be a hit until Hanks was cast as the lead.

“There were a lot of movies within the same genre that were coming out,” she adds. “Originally, the film had been with Robert De Niro, and then Harrison Ford. (Director) Penny (Marshall) cast me, but she was having trouble with the lead. Then when Tom came on board it all just cemented. We knew we were going to be better than the other body-changing movies because of Penny and Tom.”

Tom Hanks Recalls Clashing with Director Paul Greengrass on Set of Their New Movie

    WENN

The ‘Saving Private Ryan’ actor remembers stopping the filming to hash out disagreement with the director on the set of their new project ‘News of the World’.

    Dec 20, 2020
AceShowbiz – Tom Hanks and director Paul Greengrass had to pause filming on new movie “News of the World” to hash out a disagreement about a vital element of the actor’s role.
The “Saving Private Ryan” star portrays American Civil War veteran Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd in the western, in which he travels from town to town delivering readings of the national news.
However, the manner in which Hanks’ character delivers the headlines to locals was a real sticking point for the actor and Greengrass because they didn’t see eye-to-eye.
“We were halfway through the shooting day, and we ended up sitting on the wooden sidewalk of one of our Western towns. And we went at it, he and I, about what these performances of readings of the news meant,” Hanks recalled to CinemaBlend.com.

“I was hell bent on authenticity and the real news and the real stories, and almost a dry perspective and presentation of them. And he was bent on the connecting of the audience, of the inspiring of the audience, of the reading of the audience and of the enthrallment of the audience with what this news was.”
Hanks continued, “He was saying, ‘You must understand: you are putting on a show to bring people together.’ And I was saying, ‘Paul, you’ve got to understand: I am reading the news to bring people together.’ And we had to find this thing that was in there.”
The double Oscar winner doesn’t reveal who got their way, but the clash of words didn’t dampen Greengrass’ experience of working on the set of the 1870s survival drama, which is based on the 2016 novel of the same name by Paulette Jiles.
Greengrass, who previously worked with Hanks on 2013’s “Captain Phillips”, said, “It is a dream come true for me. In my many years as a filmmaker, I’ve done tough films about where we are today; I’ve done entertaining films about spies on the run, all sorts of things, but I had never made a classical, beautiful Western. That is what I’ve tried to do here.”

The Oscar-winning actor reveals in a new interview that he helped director Robert Zemeckis finance some scenes in their critically-lauded feature film due to limited budget.
    Sep 27, 2020
AceShowbiz – Tom Hanks dug deep to help finance some parts of his beloved movie “Forrest Gump”.
The actor appeared as the titular character in the 1994 film, about a man with low IQ who recounts the early years of his life when he found himself in the middle of key historical events and longs to be reunited with his childhood sweetheart, Jenny.
In a new interview, the 64-year-old revealed that the movie is particularly special to him because he invested some of his own money into the Oscar-winning flick.

One of the scenes that Tom backed, along with filmmaker Robert Zemeckis, was the run across America. He explained, “And (Zemeckis) said, ‘Well, this run is going to cost X amount of dollars.’ And it wasn’t cheap. And I said, ‘OK.’ ”
“He said, ‘You and I are going to split that amount, and we’re going to give it back (to Paramount),” he told In Depth with Graham Bensinger. “We’ll give you the money back, but you guys (Paramount) are going to have to share the profits a little bit more.’ Which the studio said ‘Fabulous, great. ok.’ And it was good for us, too.”
The deal gave Tom and Robert a larger percentage of the film’s box office gross and eventually earned them about $65 million (£51 million) in profits from the movie.
Both Tom Hanks and Robert Zemeckis went on to win Academy Awards and Golden Globes for Best Actor and Best Director respectively.

The Oscar winner, who is known as the nicest man in Hollywood, is in early negotiations to play the titular puppet boy’s father, Geppetto.
Disney bosses wanted Hanks for the role of the woodworker when Paul King was attached to direct, but the actor’s schedule didn’t allow for the project at the time.

Tom Hanks Did 22 Takes for a Scene in 'A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood'

    Sony Pictures Entertainment

The director Marielle Heller reveals the challenge of filming the Fred Rogers movie and how she forced her main actor to sing the ‘Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood’ theme song live.
    Jan 26, 2020
AceShowbiz – “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” director Marielle Heller forced Tom Hanks to sing live on set as it’s what his character Fred Rogers did.
Tom plays the beloved children’s entertainer in the new film – a role for which he has bagged a Best Supporting Actor nomination at the Oscars – but Marielle reveals the performance was far from effortless for the star.
The filmmaker says she insisted he sing the theme to the show “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” live, and that it took a huge number of takes to get right.
“We made him sing live, which you don’t usually make movie stars do, but it’s what Fred did so it’s what we wanted to do,” she tells The Guardian. “It was genuinely tricky. We did 22 takes, the most takes I think I’ve ever done of any scene in my life.”
Although Tom is famously easygoing, he still had to rein in his natural enthusiasm to play the naturally relaxed and reassuring Rogers.
Explaining his process, Marielle adds,”It was almost like it was a martial art,” explaining that the Forrest Gump star was “genuinely slowing his heart rate down, slowing his energy down” during his performance.
