Boris Johnson's U.K. Coronavirus Crisis Adapted Into New TV Series

    WENN

The U.K. health crisis and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s initial refusal to issue lockdown amid Covid-19 pandemic are confirmed to be dramatized into a TV show.
    Jun 27, 2020
AceShowbiz – Acclaimed director Michael Winterbottom is set to dramatise British Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s handling of the coronavirus crisis for a new TV series.
The Conservative Party leader has faced heavy criticism since the pandemic began in March 2020 after initially refusing to issue lockdown orders to prevent the spread of COVID-19, and instead appearing to adopt a herd immunity strategy, whereby the majority of a population is exposed to a disease in an effort to build up the antibodies to become immune.
After the delay, government officials reversed course and introduced strict measures limiting group gatherings, as residents were encouraged to remain in place at home.
Johnson then hit headlines again as he himself tested positive for the coronavirus and ended up spending time in a hospital intensive care unit, weeks before becoming a dad again, welcoming a son in April with his fiancee, Carrie Symond.
The series of events are now being adapted for a TV show, co-written and directed by “24 Hour Party People” filmmaker Winterbottom, reports Deadline.
It will be developed with bosses at entertainment firm Fremantle, alongside “True Detective” executive producer Richard Brown’s Passenger, and Winterbottom’s Revolution Films.
In a statement, Andrea Scrosati, Fremantle’s global chief operating officer, shared, “There are rare moments in history when leaders find their private lives uniquely connected to national events, where personal experience and official role collide in an unusual way. The last few months in the life of the U.K. Prime Minister clearly mark one of these moments.”
A network or streaming service has yet to be attached to the project, which is currently untitled.

    'The Office' Deletes Blackface Scene

    NBC

The creator Greg Daniels has edited a 2012 episode called ‘Dwight Christmas’ which originally contained a scene featuring Rainn Wilson with blackface depiction.
    Jun 27, 2020
AceShowbiz – “The Office” creator Greg Daniels has announced a blackface scene in the hit U.S. comedy has been edited out.
The “Dwight Christmas” episode, which aired in 2012, no longer contains a scene featuring Rainn Wilson in character as Dwight trying to convince his colleagues to celebrate Pennsylvania Dutch Christmas while in blackface.
“The Office is about a group of people trying to work together with mutual respect despite the inappropriate actions of their boss and assistant manager,” showrunner Daniels told Variety in a statement on Friday, June 2, 2020. “The show employed satire to expose unacceptable behavior and deliver a message of inclusion.”
“Today we cut a shot of an actor wearing blackface that was used to criticize a specific racist European practice. Blackface is unacceptable and making the point so graphically is hurtful and wrong. I am sorry for the pain that caused.”
The “Dwight Christmas” episode of “The Office” will no longer appear on the Netflix streaming platform or in syndication.
The news follows a string of similar actions in Hollywood to remove blackface from programmes in the wake of global Black Lives Matter protests worldwide following the murder of African-American George Floyd by a white police officer in Minnesota last month, May 2020.
“30 Rock” creator Tina Fey asked TV bosses to axe multiple episodes of the show featuring the practice. Three episodes of “Scrubs” were also pulled from the Hulu streaming platform and Netflix bosses have removed the entire British sketch series, “Little Britain”, for blackface depiction.

    Netflix

Thrilled to be part of the hit Netflix series, the actress playing sex therapist Jean Milburn expresses her appreciation over its diverse cast and discussions of sensitive and taboo subject matters.
    Jun 26, 2020
AceShowbiz – Gillian Anderson is thrilled to be part of a series like “Sex Education” that allows those “questioning their sexuality” to express themselves.
The actress, who plays a sex therapist on the hit Netflix program, was drawn to the show because of the boundaries it pushes when it comes to tackling sensitive and taboo subject matters.
“It makes it okay to be who you are, however you are,” she tells Deadline. “The fact that kids who are questioning their sexuality, or have other questions they’re curious about, can watch it, often with their parents, is beautiful.”
The 51-year-old adds that the diverse cast on the show has also resonated with viewers, which took her some time to appreciate.
“I’m not even sure I realized the extent to which it does that until after I’d seen it,” she admits. “You can read so much on a page, and then the minute you start seeing all of the fabulously diverse faces, and really commit to all the different storylines and the diverse dilemmas, you realize how unique and embracing the show actually is.”

Kristen Bell Apologizes for Taking Biracial Role in 'Central Park'

    WENN

The ‘Frozen’ actress regrets lending her voice to a mixed-race character in the comedy series, admitting she has a ‘lack of awareness of [her] pervasive privilege.’
    Jun 26, 2020
AceShowbiz – Kristen Bell has admitted a “lack of awareness of my pervasive privilege” after taking on the role of a mixed race character on comedy series “Central Park”.
The “Frozen” star had signed up to voice Molly in the Apple TV+ comedy series, but producers announced on Wednesday, June 24, 2020 that she’d stepped away from the part after she and the team decided that it would be better for a mixed-race actress to the character to life.
“This is a time to acknowledge our acts of complicity. Here is one of mine,” Kristen wrote on her social media accounts. “Playing the character of Molly on Central Park shows a lack of awareness of my pervasive privilege. Casting a mixed-race character with a white actress undermines the specificity of the mixed-race and Black American experience.”
“It was wrong and we, on the Central Park team, are pledging to make it right. I am happy to relinquish this role to someone who can give a much more accurate portrayal and I will commit to learning, growing and doing my part for equality and inclusion.”
Bell will continue to be a part of the show in a new role, while the producers are looking for a new actress to lend her voice to the role of Molly. She will reportedly re-record dialogue Kristen has already recorded for season two.
News of Kristen’s re-cast comes after Jenny Slate also hit headlines by deciding to step away from another animated show, “Big Mouth”, in which she voices a biracial character.

'Scrubs' Episodes Featuring Blackface Yanked Off Hulu

    ABC

One of the deleted episodes features Zach Braff’s character in blackface while another outing sees his co-star Sarah Chalke’s character wearing dark face paint.
    Jun 26, 2020
AceShowbiz – Three episodes of hit U.S. TV show “Scrubs” have been pulled from streaming service Hulu over characters using blackface.
Scrubs creator Bill Lawrence and ABC studios, who made the programme, both put in requests with Hulu to take down the episodes, according to Variety.
And, following their requests, one season-three episode and two episodes from season five have been removed from the service. One of the episodes featured Zach Braff’s character in blackface at a party, while another saw Elliot, played by Sarah Chalke, in blackface during a fantasy sequence.
Lawrence was contacted by a fan who referenced the recent decision to pull episodes of “30 Rock” due to blackface, tweeting the exec, “Hey @VDOOZER @hulu @ABCNetwork could we do this with #Scrubs please?”
“Agreed. Already in the works,” Lawrence replied on Tuesday, June 23, 2020.
“30 Rock”, “Little Britain”, and “W/Bob & David” are among the shows which have recently had episodes removed from streaming services due to the inclusion of blackface.
