'Narcos' Producers to Develop TV Adaptation of 'The Phantom of the Opera'

The project of adapting Gaston Leroux’s beloved story into a six-part TV mini-series is said to be in the early stages with writer Anthony Horowitz being tapped to reimagine the dark romance.
    Jun 25, 2020
AceShowbiz – The producers of drug drama “Narcos” are the unlikely brains behind plans to develop the classic novel “The Phantom of the Opera” for the small screen.
Executives at French production company Gaumont are in the early stages of adapting Gaston Leroux’s beloved story into a six-part TV mini-series.
Writer Anthony Horowitz will reimagine the dark romance, which centres on a disfigured composer who falls for singer Christine Daae, leading to a tragic series of events. While the tale has served as the basis for the long-running stage musical, Deadline reports the book will serve as the basis for the new adaptation.
“The Phantom of the Opera” has been adapted for the screen on several occasions, including the 1925 silent film version and the 2004 version starring Emmy Rossum and Gerard Butler, which was directed by the late Joel Schumacher.

The multi-media queen will talk to Tyler Perry, rapper and activist Killer Mike and actor Courtney B. Vance, among other dads as part of “OWN Spotlight: Oprah and 100 Black Fathers”.

Jenny Slate Steps Down From 'Big Mouth' to Give Missy to Black Actress

    Instagram

‘Central Park’ producers have also taken similar step in dealing with their mixed-race character by announcing that Kristen Bell will no longer voice Molly on the Apple TV series.
    Jun 25, 2020
AceShowbiz – Jenny Slate has quit cult animated show “Big Mouth”, because her character is supposed to be biracial.
The 38 year old has announced she’s stepping down from the role of Missy on the hit Netflix series, because a black actress should voice the part.
“At the start of the show, I reasoned with myself that it was permissible for me to play Missy because her mom is Jewish and white – as am I. But Missy is also Black and Black characters on an animated show should be played by Black people,” Slate said in a statement, explaining she felt she was “engaging in an act of erasure of Black people” by playing her.
“Ending my portrayal of Missy is one step in a life-long process of uncovering the racism in my actions,” she adds.

The show’s creators have accepted Jenny’s resignation, while thanking her for creating “an inspiring, compassionate and very human character”.
“We look forward to being able to explore Missy’s story with even greater authenticity to come,” a statement reads.

Meanwhile, the producers of another new animated show, “Central Park”, have announced “Frozen (2013)” star Kristen Bell will no longer voice the character Molly, who is mixed-race, on the Apple TV+ comedy series.
“Kristen Bell is an extraordinarily talented actress, who joined the cast of Central Park from nearly the first day of the show’s development – before there was even a character for her to play – and she has since delivered a funny, heartfelt, and beautiful performance,” a statement from the show’s creative team reads, “but after reflection, Kristen, along with the entire creative team, recognises that the casting of the character of Molly is an opportunity to get representation right – to cast a Black or mixed race actress and give Molly a voice that resonates with all of the nuance and experiences of the character as we’ve drawn her.”

Bell will continue to be a part of the show in a new role, while the producers are looking for a new actress to lend her voice to the role of Molly. She will reportedly re-record dialogue Bell has already recorded for season two.

'Brooklyn Nine-Nine' Scraps Four Episodes in Response to Black Lives Matter Protests

    NBC

When addressing the issue, series star Terry Crews confesses that he and his fellow cast members have had deep conversations and are adamant to use their platform in the best way possible.
    Jun 25, 2020
AceShowbiz – Hit U.S. TV show “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” has scrapped four new episodes following George Floyd’s death at the hands of police officers.
Floyd’s passing earlier this month sparked Black Lives Matter protests around the world, with questions once again arising about police brutality and system racism within the force.
While “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” has enjoyed huge success with its tales about the blundering New York police force, things are being considered more carefully in the wake of Floyd’s murder, with star Terry Crews admitting that bosses have already taken drastic steps to ensure the upcoming seventh season of the show doesn’t hit headlines for all the wrong reasons.
“(Showrunner Dan Goor) had four (new) episodes all ready to go and they just threw them in the trash. We have to start over. Right now we don’t know which direction it’s going to go in,” Crews told Deadline.
He added that he and his fellow castmembers have had “a lot of somber talks about it and deep conversations and we hope through this we’re going to make something that will be truly groundbreaking this year. We have an opportunity here, and we plan to use it in the best way possible.”

John Legend Pushes Hulu to Green Light Black Wall Street Series Amid Black Lives Matter Protests

    Instagram

The TV project, focusing on the Tulsa, Oklahoma community of Greenwood that was destroyed by race riots in 1921, had been developed by the ‘All of Me’ hitmaker along with Tika Sumpter.
    Jun 25, 2020
AceShowbiz – Singer/actor John Legend is lobbying streaming service officials at Hulu to reconsider optioning his planned Black Wall Street drama series because the topic couldn’t be more timely.
The “All of Me” hitmaker, who has also found success as a film and TV producer, had been developing the project with “Ride Along” actress Tika Sumpter back in 2016, with the series focusing on the Tulsa, Oklahoma community of Greenwood, one of America’s most famous affluent black neighborhoods in the early 20th century.
The area, nicknamed Black Wall Street, was destroyed by race riots in 1921, when more than 300 African-American locals were killed by racist white citizens. The massacre is still considered one of the most devastating in U.S. history.
Hulu bosses previously passed on the idea, but following the ongoing Black Lives Matter protests and calls for Hollywood executives to shine a light on stories about black history and culture, Legend is hoping they will revisit the pitch – and give it the green light.
“We had originally planned to do it with Hulu and then it didn’t get picked up, and we literally just wrote an email to our execs (sic) at Hulu like, ‘Yo, you need to pick this up!,’ ” the star shared on New York radio show “The Breakfast Club”.
“This is very relevant right now, and it needs to be told.”
Noting that the subject matter was recently referenced in the opening episode of the hit HBO show “Watchmen”, and is set to be explored in two separate upcoming documentaries – one by basketball ace LeBron James, and another by journalist Dream Hampton, an executive producer behind the “Surviving R. Kelly” docuseries, Legend added, “It’s important that we do a scripted drama for it as well… It was written but didn’t get picked up, so we’re gonna try to resuscitate that.”
Asked why the show wasn’t given a pilot order at the time, Legend mused, “I don’t know if they got it. I don’t think they understood how important the story was to the black community and how much it’s been a part of our folklore that we talk about with each other, and how important it is for us…”.
    [embedded content]
“(Now) I think a lot more white people are aware of how significant that moment was to us, and so I think they’ll give it a second look.”

'Game of Thrones' Author Plans 2021 Release of New 'A Song of Ice and Fire' Novel

    WENN

In an update to fans, George R.R. Martin credits self-isolation during the coronavirus pandemic for him making steady progress on his latest work, ‘The Winds of Winter’.
    Jun 25, 2020
AceShowbiz – “Game of Thrones” author George R.R. Martin is planning to finish his latest “A Song of Ice and Fire” novel by next year (21).
Fans of his books, and the hit HBO fantasy series based on them, have long been kept waiting for new installments, with the last, “A Dance with Dragons”, coming out in 2011 as the first season of the TV show aired.
However, in an update published on his blog, the 71-year-old novelist told fans the COVID-19 pandemic means he is making swift progress on the next book, “The Winds of Winter”, and plans to have it “done” in time for a trip to Wellington, New Zealand “next year.”
He wrote that he is working on the novel in “an actual cabin in the mountains” and is staying healthy by self-isolating during the coronavirus crisis.
Updating fans on his work, George added, “If nothing else, the enforced isolation has helped me write. I am spending long hours every day on THE WINDS OF WINTER, and making steady progress.”
“I finished a new chapter yesterday, another one three days ago, another one the previous week. But no, this does not mean that the book will be finished tomorrow or published next week. It’s going to be a huge book, and I still have a long way to go.”

The final series of the “Game of Thrones” TV show aired last year (19), with the TV series overtaking Martin’s books due to the long delay in completing “The Winds of Winter”.
