Van Morrison Defends Anti-Lockdown Songs, Cites 'Freedom of Speech'

    WENN

The ‘Brown Eyed Girl’ hitmaker comes to his own defense after he received ‘very negative reaction’ following the release of his anti-lockdown songs amid Covid-19 pandemic.

    Apr 26, 2021

    AceShowbiz –
Veteran singer/songwriter Van Morrison is bemoaning the “very negative reaction” to his anti-lockdown protest songs last year (20), insisting he was simply exercising his “freedom of speech.”

The “Brown Eyed Girl” hitmaker has been outspoken in his criticism of lockdown measures introduced to curb the spread of COVID-19, which halted almost all live music events in the U.K. from March, 2020.

He dropped a series of tracks outlining his strong views, including one with rock legend Eric Clapton, called “Stand and Deliver”, which was released in support of Van’s Save Live Music campaign, raising funds for his Lockdown Financial Hardship Fund, helping struggling musicians who were unable to perform.

However, Van is dismayed that only Eric paid attention to his plea for fellow famous artists to “fight the pseudoscience and speak up” and he is concerned people are being silenced for expressing alternative views.

He told The Times newspaper’s Saturday Review, “The only other person who has any traction or motivation to speak out about what’s going on, to get out there and question things, is Eric.”

“A few people got a petition together to end the lockdown, but nobody pays attention to petitions, do they?”

“If I can write about it, I do. Poetic licence, freedom of speech… these used to be OK. Why not now? I don’t understand it. Some people call it a cult. It is like a religion. Whether anyone agrees with me or not is irrelevant.”

“Just as there should be freedom of the press, there should be freedom of speech, and at the minute it feels like that is not in the framework,” he grumbled. “If you do songs that are an expression of freedom of speech you get a very negative reaction.”

And the crooner doesn’t think it’s “a given” that live music will return any time soon.

“Your guess is as good as mine because freedom is not a given any more,” he said. “You have to fight for it. That’s where the blues come in.”

Van’s views on the state of the world are explored on his new album, “Latest Record Project: Volume 1”, which hits retailers on 7 May (21).

Just one day after ‘Latest Record Project: Volume 1’ hits retailers, the ‘Brown Eyed Girl’ singer will take over England’s Real World Studios for the special livestream performance.

    Apr 16, 2021

    AceShowbiz –
Singer/songwriter Van Morrison will finally join the livestreaming trend by staging his first-ever online show to celebrate the launch of his new double album.

The “Brown Eyed Girl” star will take over England’s Real World Studios for the special performance on May 8, just a day after “Latest Record Project: Volume 1” hits retailers, and he will be treating viewers to a mixed set of fan favorites and brand new tunes.

The ticketed event will stream at 3 P.M. ET on Nugs.net.

About the gig, Morrison took to his social media accounts to share the excitement. “We are delighted to announce that Van Morrison has partnered with @nugsnet for his first-ever virtual performance to celebrate the release of his new album ‘Latest Record Project Volume 1’ out May 7th,” he posted on Instagram.

“This livestream event filmed at the legendary Real World Studios in England will showcase eagerly-awaited new music, alongside classic tracks from Van’s catalogue,” he continued. His third tweet read, “Beginning today, fans can pre-order on http://nugs.net and then tune in LIVE on Saturday May 8th, 2021 at 3:00PM ET / 8:00PM BST.”

The news of Van Morrison’s first virtual gig emerges three months after he threatened legal action against lawmakers who introduced a six-week lockdown across his native Northern Ireland in January amid the spread of COVID-19.

The musician, who denounced COVID lockdowns in song last year (2020), instructed his legal representatives to commence judicial review proceedings, arguing the ban against playing live music in indoor licensed venues was unsustainable in law and not based on credible scientific or medical evidence.

He also accused politicians of taking away people’s freedom, while alleging experts were making up facts to justify the restrictions.

Van Morrison Plans Legal Action to Challenge Live Music Ban Amid Pandemic

    WENN

The ‘Moondance’ singer has announced his plan to challenge regulations that prohibit indoor live music in his native Northern Ireland amid Covid-19 crisis.

    Jan 20, 2021
AceShowbiz – Van Morrison is threatening legal action against lawmakers who are preventing him from performing during the ongoing COVID pandemic.
The singer/songwriter has instructed his lawyers to commence judicial review proceedings against regulations that prohibit live music in indoor licensed venues in his native Northern Ireland, as part of a six-week lockdown.
Van’s lawyer Joe Rice claims his client will argue the ban in Northern Ireland is unsustainable in law and is not based on credible scientific or medical evidence.
Morrison hit the headlines last year (20), when he denounced the COVID lockdowns in three new songs and performed in London.

He also accused lawmakers of taking people’s freedom, while alleging experts were making up facts to justify the restrictions.
Rice’s letter to Northern Irish leaders calls on ministers to go public with the medical and scientific basis for the regulations.
If the ban is not lifted, the “Moondance” singer plans to officially challenge the prohibition by way of judicial review.
“Many people in the music and arts world in Northern Ireland have been devastated financially, socially and artistically by this complete ban,” Rice tells PA Media. “This differs from the law in England and Wales and the evidence behind such a negative decision in this jurisdiction is far from obvious.”
“Sir Van is taking this action on behalf of the thousands of musicians, artists, venues and those involved in the live music industry. He has been supporting many artists throughout this pandemic and is determined to ensure that, as we endeavour to emerge safely from this lockdown, artists and musicians will have a proper opportunity to play their part through live music to restore the cultural, social and economic wellbeing and success of our society.”

Eric Clapton Joins Forces With Van Morrison to Do Anti-Lockdown Charity Single

    WENN/Phil Lewis/Joel Ginsburg

Made in protest of COVID-19 restrictions, ‘Stand and Deliver’ is released in support of the ‘Brown Eyed Girl’ bluesman’s Save Live Music campaign and to raise funds for his Lockdown Financial Hardship Fund.

    Nov 28, 2020
AceShowbiz – Eric Clapton and Van Morrison are teaming up to release a charity single in protest of COVID-19 lockdown restrictions and their effect on musicians.
The track, “Stand and Deliver”, is released in support of Van’s Save Live Music campaign and will raise funds for the “Brown Eyed Girl” bluesman’s Lockdown Financial Hardship Fund, helping musicians who are unable to perform.

Van has strongly criticized lockdown measures that have halted almost all live music in the U.K. since March, and Eric has added his voice to the campaign.

“There are many of us who support Van and his endeavours to save live music; he is an inspiration,” Eric said in a statement, backing Van in September. “We must stand up and be counted because we need to find a way out of this mess. The alternative is not worth thinking about. Live music might never recover.”
Discussing the new track, which he wrote and Eric recorded, Van told Variety, “Eric’s recording is fantastic and will clearly resonate with the many who share our frustrations.”
“It is heartbreaking to see so many talented musicians lack any meaningful support from the government, but we want to reassure them that we are working hard every day to lobby for the return of live music, and to save our industry.”
The new anthem follows a collection of protest songs, including one called “No More Lockdown”, that Van released in September, alongside a petition calling for the return of live music.
The U.K. returned to lockdown in November, and residents will enter a new strict tiered system of local lockdowns from 2 December.

  • Van Morrison Slammed by Northern Ireland's Health Minister for 'Dangerous' COVID-19 Protest

    WENN/Joel Ginsburg

Robin Swann has reacted to the ‘Brown Eyed Girl’ hitmaker’s plan to release three anti-lockdown songs in the wake of government’s decision to tighten social-distancing restrictions.
    Sep 24, 2020
AceShowbiz – Northern Ireland’s health minister has slammed Van Morrison over the singer’s plans to release three songs protesting the coronavirus lockdown.
Morrison has revealed he has recorded tracks with lyrics that attacked government officials, accusing them of “making up crooked facts” to “enslave” the population, following Robin Swann’s decision to tighten social-distancing restrictions to halt the spread of COVID-19.
Swann has now fired back, revealing he is “disappointed” in Van’s “dangerous” comments.
“We in Northern Ireland are very proud of the fact that one of the greatest music legends of the past 50 years comes from our part of the world, so there’s a real feeling of disappointment,” the minister tells Rolling Stone. “We expected better from him.”

      See also…

“However, it goes further than disappointment. Some of what he is saying is actually dangerous. It could encourage people to not take coronavirus seriously. If you see it all as a big conspiracy, then you are less likely to follow the vital public health advice that keeps you and others safe.”
Swann added, “He is going way beyond raising questions… It’s actually a smear on all those involved in the public health response to a virus that has taken lives on a massive scale. His words will give great comfort to the conspiracy theorists – the tin foil-hat brigade, who crusade against masks and vaccines and think this is all a huge global plot to remove freedoms.”
Meanwhile, Morrison has announced he will donate all the profits from the new tracks to musicians who are struggling during the crisis.
“Lockdown is taking away people’s jobs and freedoms across all sectors of society,” he said. “I believe live music is essential, and I worry that without positive action it will not survive. Without live music the world would be a much poorer place. It makes a huge contribution to the economy and you cannot put a price on what music does for people’s wellbeing.”

  • Van Morrison Accuses Scientists of Lying About Covid-19 in Anti-Lockdown Song

    WENN

The ‘Brown Eyed Girl’ singer claims scientists make up ‘crooked facts’ about coronavirus and calls the government ‘overreaching’ for issuing lockdown order.
    Sep 20, 2020
AceShowbiz – Van Morrison has accused scientists of “making up crooked facts” in three new songs that protest against the coronavirus lockdown.
The 75-year-old singer will release the tunes at two-week intervals, with “Born to Be Free” the first to drop on 25 September (20).
Other controversial lyrics include Morrison arguing that the government are “taking our freedom” as he sings, “The new normal, is not normal. We were born to be free.”
“No more lockdown / No more government overreach,” he sings in the chorus. “No more fascist bullies / Disturbing our peace / No more taking of our freedom / And our God given rights / Pretending it’s for our safety / When it’s really to enslave.”

      See also…

Explaining the reasons for the songs, Morrison said in a statement, “I’m not telling people what to do or think, the government is doing a great job of that already.”
“It’s about freedom of choice, I believe people should have the right to think for themselves.”
It’s not the first time Morrison has caused controversy with his theories about the Covid-19 pandemic. The “Brown Eyed Girl” star previously hit headlines when he slammed the “pseudoscience” surrounding the virus as he urged his fans to join him in a campaign to “save live music.”
He has since received backlash for his protest against the COVID-19 lockdowns in U.K. City councilor Emmet McDonough-Brown said that his lyrics were “undermining the guidance in place to protect lives and are ignorant of established science as we grapple with Covid-19.”
