Whoopi Goldberg Dying to Be First American to Star as 'Doctor Who'

    Instagram

Opening up about her dream of bringing the long-running cult sci-fi series Stateside, the ‘Ghost’ star claims to have pitched the spin-off idea to former ‘Doctor Who’ Tom Baker.

    Jan 11, 2021
AceShowbiz – Whoopi Goldberg has a dream of becoming the first American “Doctor Who”.
The “Ghost” star admits she has always been a fan of the long-running cult sci-fi series and even pitched the idea of a U.S. spin-off to former Doctor Who Tom Baker.
Speaking to The Daily Star, she said, “I wanted to be the first female Doctor, but they have one…”

Whoopi reveals her idea to bring the show Stateside was rejected by TV bosses, but she has never given up on her dream of leading the cast of the series, “(It could be) the American version of Doctor Who ends up in New York – and it’s me,” she adds. “We don’t have a Doctor Who. We don’t have that character who is travelling through dimension and time, and being an observer… The idea of that just so made me happy. But they (TV executives) were like, ‘Um, no!’ So I was like, ‘OK, I’m cool. I understand.’ ”
But that didn’t end Whoopi’s dream, “I always hope, when I come to England, the BBC will say, ‘Hey, we want you to do something (on Doctor Who)’. I would love that… I’m still dying to do Doctor Who.”
“Doctor Who”, meanwhile, may soon need to find a new incarnation of the title character. It’s recently reported that Jodie Whittaker is gearing up to leave the series after the current 13th season.
“It’s all very hush-hush but it is known on set that Jodie is leaving and they are gearing up for a regeneration,” a source told Britain’s Daily Mirror newspaper. “Her departure is top secret but at some point over the coming months the arrival of the 14th Doctor will need to be filmed. It’s very exciting.”

Whoopi Goldberg Forced 'Sister Act' Bosses to Address Pay Disparities

    Buena Vista Pictures

The co-host of ‘The View’ says she made herself absent from filming by feigning sickness in order to get the ‘Sister Act’ producers to address the pay disparities.

    Nov 2, 2020
AceShowbiz – Whoopi Goldberg forced “Sister Act” producers to address pay disparities among the cast by taking days off “sick.”
The actress starred as Deloris Van Cartier in 1992’s “Sister Act”, which depicts a lounge singer who is forced to join a convent after being placed in the Witness Protection Program, and its 1993 sequel “Sister Act 2: Back In the Habit”.
Speaking during the Vulture festival this week (ends01Nov20), the 64-year-old “The View” host revealed that in order to show producers that the nuns on set deserved greater pay, she made herself absent from filming.
“The ladies hadn’t gotten everything I thought they should have gotten – the nuns,” she explained. “They were older women. They were women who I felt…should be able to go and have dinner and not be worried about paying hotels or whatever it was.”

To fight the wage gap, Whoopi admitted she “fell ill for a day or two” until the producers took notice and promptly resolved the issue, raising the fee for the nuns who were aged up to 82 years old.
“I got sick,” Whoopi shared. “I would never go on strike. But if my coughing and sneezing coincided with our brief problem… they fixed it and it was great.”
The star previously told fans she’s “working diligently to try to figure out how to get the gang together and come back” for a third “Sister Act” movie.
Of why the third installment of the popular comedy films didn’t come a lot sooner, Goldberg explained, “For a long time they kept saying no one wanted to see it.” But those movie execs have apparently changed their minds as the 64-year-old added, “… and then quite recently it turns out that may not be true, people might want to see it.”

  • Whoopi Goldberg 'Working Diligently' to Get 'Sister Act' Cast Back for Third Movie

    Touchstone Pictures

Giving an update on the long-awaited threequel, the ‘View’ moderator says that ‘Sister 3′ may be finally happening after years of rejection from movie execs.
    Oct 8, 2020
AceShowbiz – Fans’ wish for a third “Sister Act” movie may soon come true. As part of the musical comedy film who has been long campaigning for “Sister Act 3”, Whoopi Goldberg has given a positive update on the long-awaited threequel.
During a virtual appearance on “The Late Late Show with James Corden” on Tuesday, October 6, the actress/comedian revealed that a third “Sister Act” movie is in the works. “We’re working diligently to try to figure out how to get the gang together and come back,” she told the show’s host James Corden.

Goldberg has in the past made no secret of her interest to return for a third “Sister Act” movie. In 2019, “The View” moderator said on the ABC talk show that she’s ready to step into the iconic nun costume, but her idea has been met with rejection. “people saying ‘nobody wants to see it, it’s dated, it’s old,’ ” she told her co-hosts.
Co-host Meghan McCain disagreed with that opinion, saying, “There’s no way. Everybody loves that movie, all generations.” Goldberg replied, “It’s true.”
Goldberg plays Deloris Van Cartier, a lounge singer who’s forced to join a convent and changes her name into Sister Mary Clarence after being placed in a witness protection program, in the original 1992 movie. The film was a box office success, grossing $231.6 million worldwide.
She reprised the role in the 1993 sequel, “Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit”, in which her character leads a choir for Catholic students at a struggling school. It, however, failed to repeat the success of the first movie, grossing $57 million in the United States against a $38 million budget.

Whoopi Goldberg Lends Voice to Short Animated Film About Climate Crisis

    WENN

Speaking of ‘The Gigantic Change’, co-director George Lewin recalls being left in shock when the Hollywood legend agreed to take part in the three-minute movie.
    Jun 6, 2020
AceShowbiz – Whoopi Goldberg has partnered with Extinction Rebellion activists on a new short film aimed at helping to combat the climate crisis.
The Hollywood legend lent her voice to “The Gigantic Change”, a three-minute animated movie about the perils of climate change, in honour of World Environment Day on Friday, June 05.
George Lewin, who co-directed the short with Nicola Jane Francis, was shocked when Whoopi, a former UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and one of only 15 people in history to join the EGOT club by winning an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony award, agreed to take part in the film.
“Her (Goldberg’s) iconic voice (would) bring a perfect sense of gravitas to the performance,” director Lewin explained to Variety. “Plus she is outspoken on environmental issues and had the potential to inspire many of her followers to take action. So we sent the script to her agent, and she came back quickly saying ‘I’m in.’ We couldn’t believe it.”
Whoopi voices a grandmother from the future who reads a story about how humans cleaned up the planet to rescue humans and other species from the devastating effects of the climate crisis.

'The View' Alum Paula Faris Denies Meltdown and Whoopi Goldberg Beef

    Instagram

Unlike what had been reported, Paula shares in her new book that she and Whoopi had a mature talk with Whoopi about her decision to ‘step back’ from the morning show back in 2016.
    Apr 22, 2020
AceShowbiz – “The View” co-host Paula Faris has set the record straight about the rumors surrounding her exit from “The View” back in 2018. The 44-year-old detailed her departure in her new memoir “Called Out: Why I Traded Two Dream Jobs for a Life of True Calling” which was released on Tuesday, April 21.
Addressing the alleged beef she had with former co-host Whoopi Goldberg, Paula said, “The writer (whom I refuse to call a journalist) spun a fantastical tale about how I’d been told I was being cut in my dressing room, how I’d lost my cool and blamed Whoopi.”
“And though the article wasn’t true, though I hadn’t had a dressing-room meltdown and hadn’t blamed Whoopi for any of it, none of that mattered. The tabloids had set the narrative,” she went on speaking of the 2016 Daily Mail report.
Unlike what had been reported, Paula shared that she and Whoopi had a mature talk about her decision to “step back” from the morning show, adding that Whoopi “understood” her decision.
“I muscled my way through the rest of the convention and cried myself all the way back to New York,” Paula wrote in her book, recalling the times when reports that Whoopi was “elated” that Paula was “axed” from the show hit the web. “I considered my potential failure on ‘The View’, and that’s when the fear came. In fact, the fear seemed to metastasize, to shapeshift, to turn into something more like a reality. I didn’t wonder whether I was a failure; I knew I was.”
However, Paula admitted that she used to be having a tension with Whoopi, saying that “there was a growing disconnect between my amazing co-hosts (all of whom I still love) and me.”
Seemingly blaming her non-partisan stance for the tension, Paula said, “Show after show, the tension mounted. Co-hosts were agitated as I avoided taking sides during interviews, discussions of current events, and political debates. After each taping of the view, I returned to my dressing room fully aware that I was the odd woman out.”

Whoopi Goldberg Returns to Co-Host 'The View' via Video Call as Coronavirus Precaution

    Instagram

During the March 18 episode of the talk show, the ‘Ghost’ star admits to making the decision after receiving mixed messages from local officials about the danger of COVID-19.
    Mar 19, 2020
AceShowbiz – Whoopi Goldberg has taken to co-hosting her U.S. talk show “The View” from her New York City home after placing herself under self-isolation.
The “Ghost” star, 64, skipped Tuesday’s (March 17) studio taping of the programme to pay a precautionary visit to her doctor, a year after battling a near-fatal bout of double pneumonia.
Goldberg returned to TV screens on Wednesday’s episode of “The View”, which she co-presented via a video call from her private residence amid the global coronavirus pandemic.
On the show, the actress explained to her fellow panellists, Sunny Hostin and Meghan McCain, she had been given the “all clear” to head into work by her doctor, only to then receive mixed messages from local officials, who are battling over plans to potentially place New York City on a temporary lockdown in an effort to halt the spread of COVID-19, which can be deadly to the elderly and those with compromised immune systems.
The lack of a clear directive prompted Goldberg to remain in isolation for her own safety: “My brain said, ‘You know what? Until they can figure out what they’re doing, I should not go in,’ so that’s why I’m here.”
She joins comedienne and co-host Joy Behar, 77, in choosing to stay away from the Manhattan studio to protect herself from potentially contracting the coronavirus.

“The View” is just one of two daytime programmes, along with self-help series “The Dr. Oz Show”, still in production in the Big Apple, where they are currently being filmed without the usual studio audience and with limited staffmembers.

Whoopi Goldberg Absent From 'The View' to Consult With Doctors as Coronavirus Precaution

    Instagram

The 64-year-old TV personality plans to make a return to the daily talk show, whereas her co-host Joy Behar has announced she is taking time off to protect herself.
    Mar 18, 2020
AceShowbiz – Whoopi Goldberg was a no-show on her U.S. daytime talk show “The View” on Tuesday (March 17) after taking a break to visit her doctor.
The 64-year-old, who missed weeks on the daily magazine programme last year (19) as she battled a severe health crisis, told producers she wanted to make sure she was safe to return to the show amid the coronavirus pandemic.
“To be extra careful about her health, Whoopi is consulting with her doctor today,” co-host Sunny Hostin explained. “She wants everyone to know she feels fine and plans on being back here tomorrow.”
“We know that Whoopi had pneumonia, and was not in a good place. So, she just wants to get checked out and make sure that it’s smart for her to be here every day.”

Last week, another of Whoopi’s co-hosts, Joy Behar, announced she is taking time off the show to protect herself from COVID-19.
Meanwhile, “The View” has joined several other U.S. programmes that have stopped filming in front of a live studio audience.
