Insisting she was extremely supported by the studio executives, the ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ director clarifies her ‘beard’ statement by stressing that it was about other projects at other studios.

    Jan 7, 2021
AceShowbiz – Filmmaker Patty Jenkins has taken aim at New York Post editors for exaggerating comments she made about initial creative conflicts with Warner Bros. bosses over her vision for “Wonder Woman”.
The director recently appeared on Marc Maron’s “WTF” podcast and recalled how studio chiefs were hesitant at the start of their collaboration to take her story ideas for 2017’s “Wonder Woman” into consideration – until she put her foot down.
“They wanted to hire me like a beard,” she said. “They wanted me to walk around on set as a woman, but it was their story and their vision.”

“They didn’t even want to read my script. There was such mistrust of a different way of doing things and a different point of view… When I first joined ‘Wonder Woman’, it was like, ‘Uh, yeah, OK, but let’s do it this other way.’ But I was like, ‘Women don’t want to see that. Her being harsh and tough and cutting people’s heads off… I’m a ‘Wonder Woman’ fan, that’s not what we’re looking for!’ ”

Her remarks quickly hit headlines, but Jenkins didn’t appreciate the Post’s take on her conversation with Maron, which resulted in an article titled, “Patty Jenkins exposes ‘war’ with Warner Bros. over Wonder Woman”.
Taking Post reporters to task on Twitter on Tuesday (January 05), the filmmaker wrote, “Versions of this article seems to be everywhere and not true (sic). There was no ‘war’ with warner bros. over ww (‘Wonder Woman’).”
“I’m talking about 10 years of discussions with 10 different execs through them. And whole beard thing was about other projects at other studios.”
Jenkins then insisted she has a great working relationship with Warner Bros. executives, who recently signed the director and her leading lady, Gal Gadot, for a third film in the superhero franchise, following the recent launch of “Wonder Woman 1984”.

Patty Jenkins reacted to headlines about her war with Warner Bros. over ‘Wonder Woman’.
“I felt extremely supported in my vision on both films by @wbpictures, (producer) @ZackSnyder all the producers and everyone on board our eventual team,” she tweeted. “Just was a long road to make it. Let’s chill the dramatic headlines like ‘war’.”

Patty Jenkins Gets Candid About Warner Bros.'s Initial Mistrust Over Her 'Wonder Woman' Vision

    WENN/Sheri Determan

When addressing her internal war with the studio over the blockbuster movie, the ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ director admits they just wanted her to be a symbol of empowerment without any power.

    Jan 5, 2021
AceShowbiz – Patty Jenkins battled with Warner Bros. bosses over her vision for “Wonder Woman”, because they just wanted a female to direct the blockbuster.
The filmmaker reveals studio chiefs didn’t even want to read her script for the hit film and initially refused to take her suggestions seriously until she made it clear she wasn’t just going to be a symbol of empowerment without any power.
“They wanted to hire me like a beard,” she said on Marc Maron’s “WTF” podcast. “They wanted me to walk around on set as a woman, but it was their story and their vision.”
“They didn’t even want to read my script. There was such mistrust of a different way of doing things and a different point of view… When I first joined ‘Wonder Woman’, it was like, ‘Uh, yeah, OK, but let’s do it this other way’. But I was like, ‘Women don’t want to see that. Her being harsh and tough and cutting people’s heads off… I’m a Wonder Woman fan, that’s not what we’re looking for!’ ”

But she can understand why some executives were nervous about “Wonder Woman”, “They were all freaked out by all the female superhero films that had failed, the smaller ones that had failed, and also Christopher Nolan was making the ‘Dark Knight’ thing, so I think they were just trying to figure out what they were doing with DC at that time,” she added.
“During that period of time, there were so many scripts and I could see the writing on the wall. This was an internal war on every level about what ‘Wonder Woman’ should be.”
The film went on to become a huge hit for the studio, breaking records around the world, and Jenkins’ sequel, which was released on Christmas Day (December 25), has also been acclaimed. She is now working on a third film with “Wonder Woman” star Gal Gadot.

  • Patty Jenkins Plans to Leave 'Wonder Woman' Franchise After Third Film

    WENN

Opening up about her plans for the ‘Wonder Woman’ trilogy, the director says an upcoming follow-up to ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ might be her last in the DC female superhero franchise.
    Aug 4, 2020
AceShowbiz – Director Patty Jenkins will “probably” step away from the “Wonder Woman” film franchise after turning the superhero series into a trilogy.
The filmmaker is currently waiting to launch “Wonder Woman 1984” in theaters after the blockbuster’s original summer release was postponed until October due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Despite the delay, Jenkins has started making plans for another movie about the titular Amazon princess-turned-warrior, played by Gal Gadot, and the project will likely be her last in the franchise.
However, Jenkins warns fans there may be a bit of a wait in between releases, because she doesn’t want to jump straight back into the DC Comics world, as she had with the forthcoming 1984 after the success of 2017’s “Wonder Woman”.
In a new interview with German publication Geek, translated and posted on Twitter fan account @DCMovieNews2, she explains, “It’s just a matter of, will we change our minds (about the storyline), and when (to make it).”
“I think what we don’t want to do is do it back-to-back. It’s been great doing these two movies back-to-back, but I think it’s important to give it a little rest in between. And I like doing other things in between. And Gal has other things to do.”
Discussing her future with the franchise, Jenkins added, “The next one is probably my last Wonder Woman movie, so I have to put everything I want to show there. We have to think carefully.”
“WW84 gave me a chance to do a lot of things that I couldn’t accommodate in the first movie,” she explained. “I was so happy to tell the ‘Wonder Woman’ origin story. It was almost her birth, but we really haven’t seen what she is capable of.”

Patty Jenkins opened up about her plans for the ‘Wonder Woman’ trilogy.
“It is exciting for me to show her at the peak of her strength. But it is also very important that she fights an internal struggle: she is a Goddess and tries to help humanity. She is not only someone who fights evil, she tries to show bad people how to improve. It’s an interesting dilemma.”
