Ben Shephard frets as GMB guest doesn't realise they're on TV in awkward blunder

Ben Shephard and Susanna Reid were left fretting on Thursday’s Good Morning Britain, when one guest didn’t realise they were live on-air.

Rugby star Martin Bayfield appeared on the show, but ahead of his interview, his camera switched on unexpectedly.

The sportsman, 54, stared vacantly into space, as Ben and Susanna slowly realised he wasn’t aware that filming was underway.

Looking a little worried, Ben said: “I don’t think he realises he’s live yet, does he?”

Susanna encouraged the ITV crew to alert Martin to the mishap, saying: “Let’s let him know before he does the interview.”

Later, when Martin’s interview finally took place, Susanna couldn’t help but remark on the awkward mishap that had occurred.

She said: “Good morning, finally able to talk to you!”

The GMB lead added they “were a bit concerned” when they’d clocked he was unaware the camera had been rolling.

Former rugby union player Martin shared some joyous news with the GMB hosts once the interview was finally in full swing, revealing he has become a grandad.

A photo of the adorable newborn popped up on the screen, as the proud grandad discussed the experience.

Poking fun at his grandson, Martin remarked: “He’s a grumpy sod at the moment but he’s great.”

Ben, who has been friends with Martin for years, then joked: “Where does he get that from Martin?”

GMB star Ben also took a swipe at Martin’s cheery exterior, pretending he was more grouchy in real life.

Laughing, he exclaimed: “You’re a miserable so and so.

“You’re not the happy giant everyone thinks you are!”

Martin and the presenters then discussed the upcoming Six Nations match between Ireland and Italy.

Kicking off on February 27, the game could see the Ireland team reign victorious against the Italians, with Johnny Sexton at the helm.

Good Morning Britain airs on weekdays at 6am on ITV.
