BBC Breakfast’sDan Walker was caught by co-host Louise Minchin when he “yawned” in the studio during the morning programme.
The football-mad presenter looked red-faced and explained how he had to keep himself awake after spending a sleepless night to think over England’s defeat in the Euros 2020 final.
The Three Lions lost to Italy and failed in their bid to lift the trophy after Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka missed penalties.
Sitting on the iconic red sofa in the Salford studio, Dan told viewers: “We are trying our best to put a smile on your face for our England fans this morning…”
He paused and seemingly let out a long and involuntary yawn before Louise chimed in: “Er, not yawn on air.
“Did I just catch you yawning then?”
The presenter explained: “No, I’m just trying to scratch my arm and pinch myself a bit to keep myself awake.”
Dan, who recently stepped down from presenting BBC’s Football Focus, lashed out his opinion of yesterday’s match at Wembley stadium.
“It’s the euphoria and then, argh, the hard take at the end,” he sighed.
“I still think it was there, it was on the plate – Italy at two penalty, saved by Jordan Pickford for two penalties, when are you gonna get a chance to win a major final when the team you’re playing against only score three penalties?”
He turned to Louise and apologised for taking the on-air time before turning to colleague Sally Nugent, who asked him if had no sleep last night.

Dan revealed: “I was lying in bed at 1.30am and was thinking about what Gareth Southgate could have done differently, who should have taken the penalties, trying to think of the positives…
“And then I woke up at 3 o’clock, ready to go at 3 o’clock like normal.”
Then he ended the chit chat, saying: “So carry on Sal, what have you got for us?”
