One BBC Breakfast star made a heartfelt apology on the show after admitting he could get “emotional” while reporting on The Wanted star Tom Parker’s death.
The 33-year-old singer sadly died yesterday (March 30) after being diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour in 2020.
He leaves behind two young children and his wife, Kelsey.
Reporting on the sad news were regular hosts Naga Munchetty and Charlie Stayt, who chatted to Entertainment Correspondent Colin Paterson about the sad news.
Naga began by explaining: “Colin, I remember watching that interview that you did, there, and being so moved at the time because he spoke so candidly and so optimistically. And I love the way he said, ‘I’m putting it to one side because life is what I’m about, and I’m taking this on board.’
“He knew this was coming, his family knew this was coming, which doesn’t make it any less sad.”
Colin agreed: “No, not at all. My heart absolutely goes out to his family and his two boys, and if I get at all emotional throughout this I’d just like to say there are two caveats.
“Number one, I’m just off a flight back from LA, having covered the Oscars, so I’m very jet-lagged.
“And number two, it’s very close to my own home, because my two boys were one and three when they lost their wonderful dad George at the age of 34 from cancer, so the parallels of their story with Tom Parker’s kids is very similar.”
Colin added: “My heart goes out to his family. And when I spoke to him last year, I was just wanting to really understand what he was going through, how he was dealing with it.
“What was so impressive about how he spoke that day was how he was able to live in the present.”
Colin shares two step-sons with Louise Blyth, after tying the knot with widow Louise in 2020.
Louise wrote a memoir about her experience of losing her first husband George from bowel cancer aged just 33 – leaving her to look after their boys Jamie and Charlie.
She and Colin opted to livestream their wedding after bringing the event forward to avoid new Covid-19 rules at the time – allowing them to marry in front of 30 guests before maximum capacity was reduced to just 15.
The star told FEMAIL at the time: “On Tuesday at 12.40 we heard Boris Johnson announced that weddings were going to be reduced from 30 to 15 from Monday.
“This meant our wedding would have been torpedoed. We could not have even invited our nieces and nephews.
“We spoke for 20 minutes and decided to go for it – to move the wedding to Saturday at four days’ notice.”
