Peaky Blinders actor Toby Kirkup's death caused by 'undetectable' condition

Toby Kirkup died of an “undetectable” condition hours after he was released from hospital, an inquest has heard.

The star sadly died on August 29, 2020, at his home in Linthwaiter hours after he was discharged from Huddersfield Royal Infirmary.

The Peaky Blinders actor was aged just 48 when he died at home after seeking medical advice following chest pains and tingling feelings in his arms.

Kirkup, who also appeared in Emmerdale, was diagnosed with gastritis and was sent back to his home in Linthwaite.

Kirkup’s family has concerns about his treatment and therefore asked a coroner to investigate his death, with the findings presented today at an inquest at Bradford Coroner’s Court.

Multiple complaints from the family were made regarding his treatment on the day of his death.

The court heard that on August 18 Mr Kirkup had celebrated his birthday by taking recreational drugs.

When he returned to his home his condition deteriorated and he began vomiting and suffered a cardiac arrest.

His siblings Dominic and Pamela issued a statement which was read out by assistant coroner Ian Pears at Bradford Coroner’s Court.

They said: “On the day of his death a friend of his called Dylan rang to say he had ‘gone’. We had never expected this and it has been a huge shock.”

The pair added he was “excited about the future” and was “positive”.

The family claimed Dr Palin, who treated him the day he died, was influenced by Toby’s history of drug and alcohol consumption.

Dr Palin responded: “It didn’t affect my reasoning at all.”

Dr Palin also stated that at the time, Mr Kirkup said he “didn’t have shortness of breath”.

Pathologist Dr Karen Ramsden stated that MR Kirkup suffered from an enlarged heart and hypertension and explained: “The thing that actually killed him was a tear in the aorta.”

She stated that a toxicology report found he had used cocaine before his death.

Consultant in emergency medicine, Dr Thomas Mark Davies, confirmed that Dr Palin did the same process he would have done.

He stated that the tear in the aorta would not have been detectable at the time of his admission.

Assistant coroner Ian Pears said it was “quite clear that the correct procedures were followed”.

He said the aneurysm that killed him was “likely to have been caused by drug usage”.

In a statement released from the family, they said that after attending rehab in South Africa, Kirkup was “a sporadic user” of drink and drugs.

They said he was a “gifted boy” who was sadly diagnosed wit schizophrenia and was on medication for it all of his life.
