Susanna Reid fumes at GMB format change as MP fails to turn up for interview

Good Morning Britain was forced into a major format change when senior MP Michael Gove failed to turn up to his interview.

The ITV’s flagship news show usually speaks to a government minister every morning – giving viewers the chance to hear about the latest changes in politics from the ministers themselves.

However, host Susanna Reid and her co-stars Adil Ray and Charlotte Hawkins were left disappointed on Wednesday (February 2).

That’s because Michael Gove, who is the Secretary of State for Housing, didn’t appear on the show to speak to the anchors.

The tory MP’s absence certainly didn’t go unnoticed though, because Susanna called out the politician live on air, with a sly snub that he wasn’t ‘brave enough’ to face them.

Making a passionate on-air plea for any ministers to come onto her show, she said she wanted “someone who is brave enough to face the music every morning”.

Co-star Adil Ray was baffled at the absence too, claiming that Michael Gove was a “robust” individual, hinting he thought he could handle himself in front of the cameras.

Speaking on Gove, Adil said: “I just find it very strange, I mean Michael Gove of all people [is] quite known for being robust…

“This is an opportunity to explain to the public, move the debate if you like, let’s talk about what they’re really elected to do, yet [he] doesn’t want to come on national television on ITV, on Good Morning Britain.

“The show that is known to have a large amount of viewers in the midlands and the north, where they are trying to level up… yet they don’t want to come on.”

Ray then asked for a member of Gove’s team to replace the MP and appear on the show in his initial slot, adding: “If any of his team are listening, you are still very welcome to get in touch.”

However, Labour MP Lisa Nandy did appear on the show, meaning they weren’t completely without MPs during the broadcast.

The politician slammed the government’s levelling up report as “recycled”, and claimed that Boris Johnson “wasn’t fit for office”.

Michael Gove had been due to appear on the ITV breakfast show on Wednesday (February 2)

She had been discussing Boris’ claim that Keir Starmer failed to prosecute late sex criminal Jimmy Saville, which has been refuted.

Levelling Up Secretary Michael Gove was due to talk about his latest ‘levelling up’ campaign, which he unveiled for Boris Johnson’s government.

Boris had made “levelling up” a priority policy in his manifesto during the Conservative Party’s 2019 general election.

The strategy aims to narrow the gap between rich and poor parts of the country by changing the way power and money are dished out.

It comes as Boris and the government are being investigated by the Met Police for possible breaches of the Covid lockdown by hosting parties at No.10 Downing Street.
