This Morning took a rather bizarre turn on Friday, as hosts Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary were left stunned by a couple who declared themselves “ecosexual”.
The couple, who hail from the US and appeared on the show via video link, admitted they performed a marriage ceremony to exchange vows with the earth itself.
San Francisco-based Annie Sprinkle and her partner Beth Stephens have performed various marriage ceremonies with the sky in Oxford, the grass in Austria and the earth itself in a forest near their home.
But things came to a head when they admitted they perform “eco-sex”, and some ecosexuals perform oral sex – or “grassilingus” – on the grass – leaving Dermot warning them that nine o’clock is just too early for such a conversation.
“Make love to the planet through your senses,” they told Alison and Dermot. “You’re never alone. You can walk in the grass and know you have a lover.”
During the segment, the couple explained: “The simplest way to define it is that an ecosexual is someone who loves the earth.
“We imagine that the earth is our lover and we enjoy all the sensual pleasures that the earth has to offer.”
They went on: “You can be ecosexual and still be heterosexual or homosexual or asexual […] it just means you enjoy taking pleasure from the earth and enjoy giving the earth pleasure as well.”
Dermot then wondered what the next stage to becoming ecosexual was, as they explained: “Well, when you go for a walk you’re giving the earth a massage with your feet.
“Your E-spots are eco-sexy spots like, for example, appreciating flowers is the reproductive organs of the plants.
“You might even practice grassilingus, but that’s pretty advanced.”
Dermot couldn’t cope with that, as he giggled: “Oh, I don’t think I’m there yet!”
Alison quizzed: “Did she say grassilingus?”
“She said those words, yep!” Dermot giggled, adding: “Because it’s nine o’clock, let’s maybe not explore what that means!”
Alison later wondered whether the earth could marry more than one person, asking: “You know like you married the earth, can I marry the earth as well? Or is it like the earth would like to stay in one relationship?”
Sprinkle and Stephens explained: “Well, we say we’re ‘pollen-amorous’ – pollen like the bees. So yeah, people are the earth we’re not separate from the earth. So all sex, really, is eco-sex.”
The pair even conduct Zoom weddings to tie people to the earth, and have performed in naked art pieces in which they cover themselves in dirt to make love to the earth.
“Editorial team literally having a heart attack as we speak!” Dermot joked once the segment came to a close.
This Morning airs weekdays from 10am on ITV.
