Hollywood star Zac Efron has said his unrecognisable appearance which sparked controversy was due to an injury.
The High School Musical hunk, 34, left fans shocked when he appeared to have a more squared jawline during his performance in an Earth Day! The Musical, sparking concern from fans.
During an interview with Men’s Health, Zac addressed the rumours of his new face, admitting that he shattered his jaw while running in his house with socks on.

Zac said he slipped, hit the corner of a fountain, passed out and woke up to his chin bone “hanging off” his face.

He said that while recovering from the injury, his facial muscles got “really big” so he teamed up with a physical therapist to help with it.
Photos of him afterwards caused controversy as fans question what had happened to his face and discussed the possibility of surgery.
However, Zac maintains that he wasn’t bothered by the rumours.
“If I valued what other people thought of me to the extent that they may think I do, I definitely wouldn’t be able to do this work,” he added to the publication.

After fans noticed the change to his face, they took to social media to comment.
“I refuse to believe this is Zac Efron,” one blasted.
“I woke up and zac efron got botched wtf im so devastated,” another said.
An emotional third fan wrote: “I just found out about this and I am literally crying, there are actual tears coming out of my eyes please tell me it’s all just a nightmare please zac efron has been the my whole life.”

Zac’s friend Kyle Sandilands denied Efron had work done, saying at the time: “It’s like getting a Picasso and having a kid finger paint all over it.
“The Kyle and Jackie O” radio show in May 2021. “Why bother? … I would know if he’d had any plastic surgery.”
Efron described more injuries elsewhere in the interview, from a dislocated shoulder and torn ACL to a broken wrist and blown-out back, although those occurred when he was training.
Zac isn’t new to internet rumours as fans recently speculated that he secretly got married after fans noticed him wearing a “wedding ring” in a video from June.
The Hairspray star was seen wearing a plaid shirt, a pair of jeans and a jacket in the video, as he talked through various subjects whilst sitting on a bench near the animal.
