Christine McGuinness grieving for herself and life she missed out on after Paddy split

Love split telly star Christine McGuinness has revealed she is grieving – for herself.

The model turned TV personality is ready to crack on with her career after splitting from Top Gear host Paddy last year.

It came after they filmed a BBC documentary Our Family and Autism about her three kids living with the condition, during which she was also diagnosed as being autistic.

Christine, 34, explained: “I’d always wanted to be a wife, so once I met Patrick, I fully went into ‘perfect wife’ mode.

“You know I will stay in, I will cook and clean and make sure I’m the best wife I can be.

“I was always pretending to be something else, rather than simply being me, and that’s all part of masking.

“I was making things worse for myself because I ended up too scared to go out. This lasted for around eight years.

“Patrick just thought I was a home bird, but I was making excuses all the time, whether it was weddings or birthdays, I avoided anything that would have meant socialising and having conversations with people.”

Christine told Psychologies magazine that while it was a relief to be diagnosed, she wished it had happened sooner.

She said: “This might sound really dramatic, but I grieve for little Christine.

“I grieve for the life I missed out on, all those years of feeling so misunderstood and unwanted.

“Autism wasn’t really spoken about, and I suppose I was just left to it.

“Nobody ever took me to one side and asked me what the matter was – if they had, maybe I’d have explained that sometimes it’s too loud and overwhelming, and then maybe I’d have got the help I needed and I might have finished my education.”

She also said that Paddy, 49, is still living at home despite them separating after 11 years of marriage because their kids – nine-year-old twins Leo and Penelope, and Felicity, six – rely on routine.
