Sex And The City fans may have forgotten Samantha Jones’ brief lesbian fling with artist Maria.
Jones, played by blonde bombshell Kim Cattrall, met Diega Reyes in season four and the pair immediately hit it off, but Samantha made it clear that she was only interested in friendship. However, in typical Samantha fashion, the PR professional decides she’s up for giving it a go.

Their relationship was short but serious, with many scenes showing the pair venturing out to social events and even taking baths together. Samantha’s friends – Carrie, Charlotte and Miranda – are all completely baffled at the sudden sexuality switch. At one point, Charlotte exclaims: “She’s not a lesbian, she probably just ran out of men!”
Overall, the notion of Samantha exploring her sexuality is met with a little hostility and slight judgement from her pals but despite this, headstrong Jones continues to spend time with Maria. Cracks begin to show when the pair address Samantha’s dating life as Maria realises the amount of sexual partners she’s previously encountered.
Throughout the show, Samantha also makes a point of noting that she is “not a relationship person,” so it appears the producers made subtle hints that their union was doomed from the start. Tempers flare after an intimate bath scene, during which Jones finally puts her cards on the table and explains that they do “too much talking” after a recent lull in their sex life.
In a later scene, Maria smashes Samantha’s plates after an altercation about a missing “spark” in their relationship. The pair then decide to call things off completely and in the end, Samantha and Maria break up as Jones realises she misses men too much – but not before the pair try using a strap-on to fix their issues.
Outside of Kim Cattrall’s acting career, she is widely regarded as a queer icon due to her pioneering SATC character. She also starred in the Queer As Folk reboot as Brenda Beaumont, who has sex with a non-binary person in the Peacock series.
The show originally aired in 1999 and ran for two seasons, which aired on Channel 4 until the year 2000.
