Steve Wright ‘found dead after medics were called to an incident’ at his home

Steve Wright was found dead after medics were reportedly called to an “incident” at his London home.

The police have confirmed that the 69-year-old’s death is being treated as “unexpected but not suspicious” with a coroner expected to draw up a report in the coming weeks.

According to the MailOnline, a spokesperson for the London Ambulance Service confirmed that teams were dispatched on Monday 12 February, where they attended the scene. They told the publication: “We were called at 10.07am on Monday 12 February to reports of an incident.”

The source added “We sent a number of resources to the scene. Very sadly, a person was pronounced dead at the scene.” A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police said: “A man in his 60s was pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin have been informed. The death was unexpected, but is not being treated as suspicious. A report will be prepared for the coroner.”

It comes as the last picture of the legendary broadcaster shows him larking around and taking ‘ironic selfies’ with a friend in New York just weeks before his death. Floods of tributes poured in for the broadcaster, who presented programmes for BBC Radio 1 and Radio 2 for over four decades.

However, it would seem many co-stars and friends have been left totally “shocked” by the news of his sudden passing. Some even went on to claim that they’d see the star only recently.

Radio 2 host Sara Cox became emotional as she spoke to listeners on Tuesday (February 13). She said: “It’s really hard to know what to say about the news of Steve Wright’s passing, except we are all shocked and devastated and blindsided by this news.

“Steve was an extraordinary broadcaster, a really kind person, he was witty, he was warm, and he was a huge, huge part of the Radio 2 family, and I know my fellow DJs will all be absolutely shattered too.”

Channel 5 star and radio host Jeremy Vine told BBC News: “It’s come as a complete shock to us. The Radio 2 family are in mourning. The thing about Steve is that he was 69 when he died, but he still sounded like he did when he was 30. He was such an incredible professional… a lovely man.

“He was so encouraging to the next generation of presenters like me. He was so generous with his time. He was such a huge figure in British radio. That cheerful voice is gone, and there are so many people who will feel his loss.”

Jo Whiley, who is a presenter on Radio 2, confessed it was “odd” to be offering up tributes to her co-star. She said: “It’s extremely hard to know what to say and to be talking about someone that you saw only days ago in this very studio where I am right now – doing a tribute show to that person just does not feel right.”
