Elton John says he would be dead if he didn't kick drug and booze habit

Elton John has candidly told fans he believes he would be dead if he wasn’t told to seek help with his well-publicised drink and drugs habit.

The star took to social media to thank friends and family for their cards and well wishes on his 30th anniversary of becoming sober.

Elton posted a series of snaps to his official Instagram page, which showed an array of gifts and cards.

Elton captioned the post: “Reflecting on the most magical day having celebrated my 30th Sobriety Birthday.

“So many lovely cards, flowers and chips from my sons, David, friends in the Program, staff at the office and in our homes.

“I’m truly a blessed man. If I hadn’t finally taken the big step of asking for help 30 years ago, I’d be dead.

“Thank-you from the bottom of my heart to all the people who have inspired and supported me along the way.”

Elton eventually sought medical help and checked into a facility in Chicago due to his addiction to Class A drug cocaine.

“It wasn’t a treatment centre, not like one of the posh ones anyway, which is not what I needed,” Elton previously explained.

He added to CNN’s Larry King: “I wasn’t ashamed about going in and talking about my drug addiction.

“I was more ashamed that I couldn’t work the washing machine than the fact that I was taking drugs.”
