Countryfile’s Julia Bradbury spoke openly about trolls after she was shamed for being too skinny in a recent bikini photo.
While trying to just share a photo of herself smiling in the sun, comments began to flood in saying she needed to eat or, even more cruel, that she looked like a “cancer patient”.
On ITV’S Lorraine she said: “Here’s the problem – I’ve got skinny collar bones. I can’t do anything about that.
“They can say ‘she needs a bag of chips’, but I don’t think chips or a dirty burger goes straight to your collar bone.”
She then went on to discuss the potential trauma it could cause to people with mental health issues.
The BBC star continued: “It’s a huge problem though, because I’m fairly confident and can handle it.
“But there are a lot of people out there with mental health issues, with body shaming issues and the fact is that sometimes there’s one comment that can just get someone in the wrong way.
“They weren’t kind comments and that’s what social media can bring on, people saying ‘you’re not well, you look like you’re having chemotherapy’.
“That just isn’t constructive criticism, it’s just being nasty.”
Julia had previously spoken about how she would want there to be repercussions for people who write abuse to others online.
Speaking to The Mirror, the star said: “I have friends whose daughters have anorexia and it is awful, and I have friends who were bulimic and these are horrible diseases.
“I think if I wasn’t of a sturdy mindset those kind of comments could be deeply upsetting.
“I think body shaming can go both ways. I am hoping things will have changed by the time my kids are older and there might be more restrictions.”
