Spice Girls more popular outside of the UK despite being national treasures

The Spice Girls are one of – it not the – most iconic British bands of all time.

The 90s phenomenon consisting of Mel C, Mel B, Victoria Beckham, Emma Bunton and Geri Halliwell conquered the word – with every corner of the globe falling for their wild antics.

25 years on since the release of their debut single Wannabe it seems that global girl power is stronger than.

In fact, new streaming figures reveal that despite being the ultimate female British export, the girls are more popular abroad than on home soil.

According to streaming giant Spotify, both the US and Germany listen to the group more than we do here in the UK.

The fourth country who are Ziga-Zig-Ahhing is Mexico, followed by Australia and Canada.

But when it comes to songs Wannabe still holds strong.

The track boasts over 590 million streams around the globe to date, with Stop and 2 Become 1 coming in second and third retrospectively.

According to Spotify after the Spice Girls perfromed for the final time as a five piece at the 2012 Olympic closing ceremony the band enjoyed a seriously impressive digital boost.

Spotify reported a 282% uplift in streams for Wannabe on the 13th August 2012, when the games drew to a close, as well as an uplift of 712% in the UK.

Mel C recently opened up about the prospect of the girls hitting the road once more.

Speaking on The One Show, she said: “So we toured in 2019 and it was an incredible with the stadium shows and we had an amazing experience.

“We thought we need to do more we want to do more.

“This year is 25 years since wannabe so it would have been perfect to do more dates but little bit of a delay with that.

“I should be on a solo tour as I put out an album at the end of 2020 but that is now delayed until January/ February 2022.”

Initial plans had been for the Spice Girls to reunite for a world tour in 2021 but the ongoing pandemic put a stop to that.

The group were also heavily rumoured to be booked by to perform as a five piece at Glastonbury 2020.

However, due to the pandemic the iconic festival was axed for both 2020 and 2021.
