Jack Osbourne's life – working with dad Ozzy, tragic health battle and drug addiction

Growing up with a rock star dad like Ozzy Osbourne has meant Jack Osbourne’s life has been anything but ordinary.

Jack was only 16 years old when he shot to fame with his famous family on the MTV reality series The Osbournes – and it gave the world a look inside the drama-filled lives of Jack and his family.

On the show, Jack appeared with his metal singer dad Ozzy, his X Factor judge mum Sharon, and his reality star sister Kelly.

However, reality shows aside, there’s so much more to Jack’s action-packed life than meets the eye, and to mark his 36th birthday, Daily Star have taken a closer look.

Jack was born in London in 1985 to two famous parents – Black Sabbath singer Ozzy and music manager Sharon Osbourne.

Although Jack described his childhood as “perfectly happy and contented”, but his school life was affected by the family constantly moving house.

When he was six, Jack and his family moved from Buckinghamshire to Los Angeles, but they returned a year later, and when he was 11, they moved back to the States – but this time to Beverly Hills, California.

He disliked school, and it didn’t help that he was diagnosed with dyslexia at the age of eight before getting an ADHD diagnosis at the age of 10.

However, it seemed like there were plenty of opportunities for him as Jack was offered an internship at Virgin Records – where mum Sharon had been managing the band The Smashing Pumpkins.

He then became a talent scout for Epic Records, and he even started helping his mum manage his dad Ozzy’s annual festival – called Ozzfest.

Drug addiction & recovery

Jack has spoken openly about his struggle with drugs and alcohol over the years.

He got drunk for the first time on his 13th birthday, where he was drinking whisky.

By the young age of 14, he was drinking on a regular basis and even started smoking marijuana.

Jack began indulging in a life of heavy partying, and at one point things got so bad that he had to be admitted into a child psychiatric ward – with an addiction to OxyContin – an opioid medication.

Jack’s reliance on drugs grew stronger after his mum was diagnosed with colon cancer – which she had surgery for in July 2002.

Jack was also suffering from depression, and one day he tried to commit suicide after hearing his girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend pick up the phone when he tried to call her.

Jack tried to end it all by taking a mixture of prescription pills, and cutting his hands with glass, but he woke up 12 hours later.

He carried on taking drugs until he took himself to an adolescent psychiatric ward – admitting that he “never wants to feel this way ever again”.

He enrolled in a recovery program in Malibu after a 10 day detox, and he was able to celebrate 16 years of sobriety in April 2019.

He told People: “It’s a part of my life. I got sober at 17 and … it’s a long time. I chose to kind of commit myself to living life sober.

“I think in this day and age when the opioid crisis is what it is — it’s the number-one killer of men under the age of 50, it’s actually lowered the life expectancy of Americans now — I think people need to be more open about, ‘Hey there is a solution to this problem.

“It might not be the only solution but there is one out there.”

Life with multiple sclerosis

Jack was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis when he was 26 years old.

It came after the star had suffered a number of symptoms over the years, such as numbness in his legs, blindness in one eye, and issues with his stomach and bladder.

Sharon revealed that she felt guilty when she first heard about her son’s MS diagnosis.

She said: “The first thing Ozzy and I asked ourselves was, ‘What did we do wrong?’

Ozzy said: “I was very sad and totally in shock.

“[But] I’ve got to tell you, he’s handled it much better than I would have. He’s a very strong kid.”

To combat the condition, he takes daily medication as well as vitamin supplements and hormone replacement therapy.

He even jetted off to Europe to receive stem cell therapy at one point, and he’s put in place other lifestyle changes like regular exercise and changing up his diet.

He’s opened up about his fear of the condition worsening, and he revealed doctors have told him to stop taking part in high-intensity workouts.

He said: “Right now am I going to be in a wheelchair? No. But if I don’t take care of myself, who knows.”

Jack tied the knot with his ex-wife Lisa Stelly after just four months of dating.

The pair got married in an intimate Hawaiian ceremony on 7 October 2012 – and they went on to welcome three children.

They had their first child, Pearl, before they were married.

However, tragedy struck the couple, because Lisa revealed she suffered a miscarriage in her second trimester – after announcing they were expecting their second child in August 2013.

They had been expecting a son who would have been named Theo.

They welcomed their daughter Andy in June 2015, and their third child in February 2018, a daughter called Minnie.

Sadly though, it was announced that Lisa had filed for divorce just three months after Minnie’s birth.

They confirmed their separation in a joint Instagram post that read: “What’s best for our family right now is that we separate lovingly and remain best friends who are committed to raising our children together.”

They finalised their divorce in March 2019, but they have agreed to joint custody of their three young daughters.
