Westlife's Nicky Byrne reveals hilariously vain detail about Simon Cowell's office

The Westlife lads looked back on their early days at an intimate press event and revealed some hilarious behind the scenes tales about some of music’s biggest bosses.

The event was held to celebrate the reunion of the group and to celebrate the news of their upcoming tour which will be held next year, titled The Wild Dream Tour.

During the cosy chat, hosted by Vernon Kay, the boys spilled a lot of secrets including one about a particular Mr Simon Cowell.

The group were first introduced to the X Factor king during the nineties and were welcomed into his office one day, which they said felt like a sketch from a “cartoon” film.

Nicky Byrne said: “Simon, he has a mirror in his office and behind him, Simon sits like you know that cartoon when you never got to see the guys face… Anyway…

“Behind him, it says ‘yes, Simon, you look terrific!’ engraved into the mirror, which is incredible. So, you’re looking at Simon and behind it says that.”

During the discussion, the lads also let slip that X Factor’s Louis Walsh slapped one of them around the face.

Louis had decided to consider looking into the lads after Shane Filan’s mother managed to get hold of Louis’s number and hounded the music manager.

After working with Louis, he brought the group to an audition in front of a pre-Pop Idol Simon Cowell, but Shane flunked his vocals due to being hungover.

Shane said: “I was dying from hungover, we did the song and afterwards we came out of the room and Louis slapped me around the face and shouted at me. He was like ‘I was counting on you, what were you doing? You’re letting me down!”

He jokingly added: “I thought my career was over, and nowadays you’d be put in jail for that in all honesty!”

The lads exclusively chatted to the Daily Star about their upcoming plans, with them revealing how excited they are to get back on the road.

Kian Egan said: “Me and the lads missed each other throughout the lockdown and didn’t see each other for well over a year so it is going to be fantastic to get back on the road together again next year!

“We’ll be making up for lost time and will be giving our fans the best shows of our lives.”
