I'm A Celeb stars get '800 calories a day' to 'prevent starvation', says Nicola McLean

I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! star Nicola McLean has confessed that she lost a stone in three weeks when she took part in the hit reality series.

Nicola, 40, was a contestant in the 2008 series of I’m A Celeb and says the restricted diet led to her weighing just seven stone when she left the jungle camp.

The former glamour model spent 18 days living in the camp before being eliminated in sixth place.

Talking exclusively to Daily Star, she described how the stingy meals are designed to provide just enough calories to prevent starvation in the contestants.

She said: “I lost about a stone when I was in I’m A Celeb, I was absolutely minute when I came out of there.

“I was like a size 4-6 and probably weighed about seven stone. I was tiny – I was small to start with, obviously, you go in a bikini so I was like eight and a bit stone to start with but people lost a lot of weight in our camp. You literally don’t eat.

“They do make sure you have enough calories to not starve – but you are starving – the calories are roughly about 800 calories a day that they make sure you have.”

Nicola also admitted that she found it easier to deprive herself of meals during the show because of her history of eating disorders.

She continued: “Do you know what I have suffered really badly with eating disorders so I don’t know if I’m really good at not eating, I have been tortured for life with an eating disorder. Yeah, you’re hungry but I coped with it fine because I was used to starving myself if that makes sense?”

Nicola then confessed that she would give some of her food to Blue star Simon Webbe because he struggled to cope with the restricted diet.

She explained: “Sometimes I would give extra food to Simon Webbe because I could see he was really struggling and I thought bless him I don’t need all that he can have some of mine.”

And Nicola admitted that the main topic of conversation among the celebs is food because they’re so deprived.

She added: “All you think about in there is food, you’re constantly talking about it.”
