Jurassic World Dominion has it all – somehow squeezing the franchise’s trademark action sequences, dastardly plotting, scientific schemes, teenage angst, romance and even hope for the future into its 2hr 27m run-time.
As a casual fan of the dinosaur dominated trilogy, it was thoroughly enjoyable and could quite easily have been a stand-alone film.
Of course, previous plot points from Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom are explored further in Dominion, although some feel squeezed in just to complete the storyline, rather than to add any real substance.
Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard are back as Owen Grady and Claire Dearing, now living in a world in which dinosaurs roam free.
And of course Jeff Goldblum is back as Dr Ian Malcom, truly the scene-stealer of the entire movie.
His delivery of his one-liners feels almost jarring when Jurassic World Dominion isn’t advertised as a comedy, but the moments of light relief are a welcome break in what is otherwise a non-stop action movie.
Similarly, the on-screen reunion of Goldblum, Sam Neill and Laura Dern adds a more palatable pace to the film – and the original trio being back together works as more than just fan service.
The movie is split between a few different storylines – the OG three and the Jurassic World regulars – with the younger cast given the more edge-of-seat action.
It makes sense, with Neill, Dern and Goldblum’s storyline having a more intellectual feel whereas Pratt and Howard are clearly “parents” on a mission.
When the character groups come together for the climax, it’s a natural progression and goes down a path that really is a spectacle.
With that in mind, if you get the opportunity to watch Jurassic World Dominion in 4DX, take it.
Viewing the film in Cineworld’s multi-sensory 4DX is definitely a novelty, but one that lends itself so well to Jurassic World Dominion.
There’s barely a moment that your chair isn’t jolting you around which only adds to the heart-stopping action sequences and eeriness of the setting.
As expected from a Jurassic World movie, the two-and-a-half hours are full of fights – of the human and dinosaur kind – tense atmospheres, dangerous driving and even more dangerous beasts.
Cineworld’s 4DX adds an extra level of enjoyment to the film, throwing you directly into the drama.
It lends itself perfectly to some of the Jurassic Park Easter Eggs that eager fans can spot, such as a spitting dinosaur or a teetering car.
Jurassic World Dominion is in no doubt a great blockbuster movie that would be enjoyable for casual fans just as much as the hardcore ones – but mainly for the glorious shots of the dinosaurs roaming in the human world and the never-ending action.
The plot is, subjectively, nothing out of the ordinary and may leave the really dedicated fans wanting more, however it brings the franchise to a close in a positive – and hopeful – way.
From the reunion of the original trio, seeing dinosaurs in the real world (surely that’s something everyone has dreamed of once in their life?), the Jurassic Park Easter Eggs and the heart-stopping action, Jurassic World Dominion allows fans to bid farewell to the franchise in style.
Highlights include a multi-level high-speed chase through the streets of Malta, an underground dino Fight Club and a seriously satisfying battle of the beasts.
The crux of the plot is laid out well but does feel a little rushed by the time the movie concludes.
But Jurassic World Dominion is a must-see for any movie fan, especially those wanting a little extra with its 4DX compatibility.
