Noddy Holden, lead singer of 70s rock band Slade, has issued a health update after he was originally given just six months to live.
He has kept his five year cancer battle under wraps after being given just half a year before trying an “experimental treatment”. Holden spoke to Radio 2 recently and said: “It was touch and go. I lost all my hair. My weight was down to about eight stone, so every cloud.”
“I’ve just had a scan last week and everything’s on an even keel at the moment, so I hope it carries on that way. I’m fit, fit, fit…but I’m fit for nothing.”

His wife Suzan revealed in October that the 77-year-old was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer five years ago. In her column, the author wrote: “To watch him do what he does so brilliantly was thrilling, entertaining and profoundly moving. You see, five years ago, we were given the devastating news that he had oesophageal cancer and only had six months to live.”
Later that month the couple discussed his health on Channel 5’s Jeremy Vine show with Alexis Conran. Noddy revealed that he was put on an experimental form of chemotherapy treatment that had not been used on “anyone over 60”.
The rocker admitted: “I was more worried for my family, how they were going to react, than I was for myself really. I went eventually to The Christie Hospital in Manchester and I said: ‘Well, is it six months? Is that it? Is that the end of the line?’”
Holder explained they told him “the only option he had” was to try the experimental treatment. He said the hospital “had some success” with it but were wary about offering it to over 60s as “it was very, very hard going.”
Noddy said that the doctors noted his “positive outlook and his mind” which “could help him” before they asked if he was “willing to take the trial on”. Holder asked “what choice did he have” and the treatment began.
The Slade star confessed that it was “very hard going but five years later he’s still standing”. Noddy also said that he decided to keep his cancer treatment a secret for half a decade because he “didn’t want the attention” and “wanted to deal with it in his own way”.
