BBC Breakfast’s Naga Munchetty ‘destroys’ minister as she returns after mystery absence

Naga Munchetty clashed with a Tory minister live on BBC Breakfast as she returned to the famous red sofa for the first time in weeks.

The 48-year-old presenter was back on television screens on Thursday (February 8) morning alongside Charlie Stayt and the pair woke up the nation with the latest headlines from across the globe.

They welcomed policing minister Chris Philp onto the show to discuss the news that the Government will unveil new measures that could see protesters jailed for climbing on war memorials as part of a crackdown on demonstrations. The move follows an outcry in November when pro-Palestine protesters climbed on the Royal Artillery Memorial in London while police looked on.

Conversation later turned to the criticism Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is facing after joking about Labour’s position on trans people when the mum of murdered teenager Brianna Ghey – who was transgender – was in Parliament. During Prime Minister’s Questions, Mr Sunak ridiculed Sir Keir Starmer for U-turning on “defining a woman”.

No 10 said it was “legitimate” to question the Labour leader’s position but Brianna’s father, who is among those calling for an apology, said the PM’s comment was “degrading”. Naga asked Mr Philp on whether he thought Mr Sunak’s jibe was approbate when the mother of Brianna was in the house.

Mr Philp appeared to avoid the chance to give his own opinion on Mr Sunak’s views, which led Naga to repeat the question on more than one occasion. As Mr Philp continued to not answer Naga’s question, she moved on to ask whether Brianna family’s will have an apology from the Prime Minister.

As he appeared to avoid her second question, Naga raised her voice and still didn’t get an answer from Mr Philp. Fans rushed to their keyboards to praise Naga for her “excellent questioning” during the interview. Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, one fan penned: “Go Naga.” Another added: “Yes, Naga go get that man.”

A third person said: “Naga has no time for the useless Chris Philp and I love it.” A fourth person agreed: “Naga destroying this Tory guy should come with a warning like when nature shows have lions devouring wildebeests..” A fifth posted: “Excellent questioning from #Naga there, with the minister of policing #ChrisPhilp Another Tory desperately & shamelessly trying to defend #RishiSunak’s crass display yesterday.”

Naga was praised as she “destroyed” Mr Philp

Peter Spooner, Brianna Ghey, told Sky News: “As the Prime Minister for our country to come out with degrading comments like he did, regardless of them being in relation to discussions in Parliament, they are absolutely dehumanising. Identities of people should not be used in that manner, and I personally feel shocked by his comments and feel he should apologise for his remarks.”
