Coronation Street fans are in for another dramatic week on the ITV cobbles this week as one familiar face finally returns.
Loyal fans of the long-running soap will remember doting mum Fiz Dobbs left the street last May for a higher paid job as an Underworld supervisor at a branch in the heart of Norwich. In the meantime, actress Jennie McAlpine took a well-deserved break from the soap to welcome her third child, a little girl named Doris.
Now the fiery redhead is ready to come back after 10 months away from the street. It’s fair to say the loveable character knows how to make an entrance, when Fiz and Tyrone (Alan Halsall) arrive home to find Evelyn (Maureen Lipman) and Cassie (Claire Sweeney) in the middle of a row.

She wastes no time in pointing out to Tyrone that there’s not enough room to house everyone at No. 9. This leaves the loving dad with a difficult decision on his hands as he battles over who to boot out of the house: his Nan or his long-lost Mum.
Later on in the week, Tyrone encourages some family competition between the strong matriarchs at No. 9 when Evelyn and Cassie try to impress the family with their culinary skills. Tyrone tells Cassie and Evelyn that he doesn’t want either of them to leave and for now, the pair should carry on as they are.
But Fiz can’t help but feel unsure, as she insists on telling him this could be a recipe for disaster. Meanwhile, Fiz tries to impress Carla with some new business ideas she picked up at the Norfolk factory she previously worked at.
At the end of the week, a glum Fiz confides in Tyrone that she failed to get a promotion despite her wealth of new ideas. Not only that, the girls appear to prefer the company of Evelyn and Cassie over her.
After a deep heart-to-heart with his wife, he shares his concerns about Fiz to Evelyn, worried that she feels side-lined and that the kids don’t need her anymore. To help mend their broken family, Evelyn urged Ruby to read out her monologue for school about who her role model is.
It’s fair to say fans were over the moon to see the cheeky redhead return to the soap after she was pictured on the cobbles last month. Alan celebrated her return to the soap by posting a sweet snap on Instagram of the on-screen family.
Referencing the house the characters all live in, he wrote: “No.9. Family is the heart of the home. So happy to be together again & back to work.”
Fiz’s return will be the first time that Jennie has worked with Claire Sweeney and Billie Naylor, who was recast as Tyrone’s daughter Ruby. Both actresses joined the soap during Jennie’s maternity leave last year.
Claire also shared a behind-the-scenes snap of the family on set. She captioned the picture: “Inside no 9 @coronationstreet love my family and great to meet my daughter in law.”
Sweeney has already teased what her return will mean for the family. She said: “It’s going to change the dynamics in that house – it is Fiz’s house and Fiz’s family. Tyrone believes in Cassie – [he] forgives and protects her in his own way.
“Will that change when Fiz comes back? Cassie will try her best, I am sure, but there will be an element of competition. They dynamic of Fiz and Evelyn’s relationship could upset Cassie. It’s going to be so interesting to see.”
Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8pm on ITV1 or catch up on ITVX.
