Adrian Chiles has announced that his father, Peter Chiles, has sadly died at the age of 86.
The former The One Show host, 56, confirmed on Wednesday (March 20) that his beloved dad passed away on March 9. He explained his father had fallen and fractured his shoulder in January and ended up in a community hospital, where he died six weeks later.
Adrian admitted he was “shocked at how shocked I am” in his column for The Guardian. The TV star added that it felt as though his father was “stuck” between a life he “didn’t want to live” and a death he “didn’t want to die”. He wrote: “All my life I’d worried about my dad dying.”

Chiles said he had felt the same about other relatives but “mainly” over his late father. He shared that he wasn’t sure why and also suggested he had been “unprepared” for it.
The TV star said that his father passed away around 50 years after he began “worrying” about it. He detailed how he has not been able to “get his head around much” in relation to the recent bereavement, reports the Mirror.
He wrote: “About the only thing I am sure of is that 50 years of worrying about it was properly pointless. Because imagining – let’s call it pre-feeling – this pain turned out to be no preparation at all for the real thing.”
Adrian shared that he’s still “shocked at how shocked” he is about his dad’s passing. He said the family “knew it was coming” and called it a “mercy” for Peter and those who loved him that it “came when it did”.
He also confessed that despite loving his father “greatly,” he feels “surprised” and “even a bit guilty” for being “so terribly upset” over the loss. He talked about speaking to people who lost their loved ones earlier in life.
Adrian admitted that sharing the news of Peter’s death with friends who lost parents, siblings or children “way before their time” feels “not far short of self-indulgent”. He added that he had “slightly lost sight of the fact” that losing parents later in life is still “bloody awful”.
He wondered if things would have been “any easier” if there was a different attitude towards death throughout his life. Writing for the outlet, Adrian said he’s still “shocked” every time he writes the word “died” after his dad’s passing.
He also revealed that he had been left “floored” after reading a text message that referred to his “dad’s death”, he hadn’t seen it “expressed like that” before and it pained him to see it in writing.
