Lil Nas X Almost Missed Out on 'Old Town Road' Blessings Due to 'What Other People Were Saying'

    Facebook

The country music hip-hop star admits he was ready to move on and ‘throw out’ his mega-hit single only months after the release back in 2018 before it went viral.

    Dec 3, 2020
AceShowbiz – Lil Nas X was “ready to throw out” his mega-hit “Old Town Road” months after its release.
The country trap song went viral in March 2019 and remained at the top of the chart all the way through to summer, while in April (20), Billy Ray Cyrus jumped on a remix of the track, only adding to its popularity.
However, the 21-year-old rapper has admitted he felt ready to move on and show his fans what else he can do soon after “Old Town Road” came out.
Speaking to Zane Lowe on Apple Music’s ‘At Home With’ series, he confessed, “Old Town Road didn’t stop being number one until August, I think, of 2019, and I was already ready to throw it out the window in June last year.”
“And I was so ready to move on from it because of what other people were saying that I almost missed out on even bigger blessings from it.”

During quarantine amid the coronavirus pandemic, the Grammy-winner says he’s become a better songwriter and made it his aim to show the real him behind the characters he presents through his music.
“I found better, healthier ways to create. Little things, like taking much more time with my lyrics and putting more into the concept of whatever the song I am making,” he explained. “Because I used to go to the studio, make the song, I’m out. Never go back to it, never work on it again. It worked, but it’s like, that wasn’t the move.”
“If I can do that without doing that, what can I do beyond that? Another thing with quarantine I decided I wanted to do was definitely give people more of an insight of me beyond the characters I portrayed.”

And on what fans can expect from his upcoming debut album, he teased, “This album exuberates confidence, creativity. Just me completely stepping out of my comfort zone and saying whatever I want and giving my actual stories, giving my fans something to take from me.”

Lil Nas X Is Futuristic Santa in 'Holiday' Music Video

    [embedded content]

Following up the ‘Back to the Future’-themed teaser, the official full video for the rapper’s Christmas song sees him as an unorthodox Santa Claus dressing in silver.

    Nov 13, 2020
AceShowbiz – Lil Nas X is back to spread the Christmas spirits early. Just in time for the Yuletide season, the Grammy Award-winning rapper debuted his new song aptly titled “Holiday” along with its official music video on midnight Friday, November 13.
Picking up where the “Holiday” teaser left off after the “Old Town Road” hitmaker ditched his cowboy ensemble for a Santa Claus costume, he does take the baton as Father Christmas with a twist. Instead of donning the classic red outfit, he’s clad in silver as he appears to portray Santa from the future, playing along with the “Back to the Future” homage in the teaser.
Lil Nas also portrays three other characters within a gigantic, sci-fi Santa’s Workshop at the North Pole. One of them sees him in a black robotic costume as he seemingly depicts a character from a video game. He then trades the all-black ensemble for a striped outfit which has spikes on it and matches his hairstyle, while riding a red car.

The fourth character is dressed in silver with a sleeveless top and a short skirt, while sporting long silver braids. He’s dancing with some robots in the background during the chorus which goes, “Ayy, it’s a holiday/ I got h**s on h**s and they outta control, yeah/ Ayy, it’s another way/ All my n***as on go and I hope that you know it.”
The video ends as Lil Nas’ Santa takes a ride across the United States in a high-tech sleigh, a Christmas-red Dodge Challenger, pulled by robotic reindeer, which flies past his own versions of Mount Rushmore, the Hollywood sign, the Golden Gate Bridge, the Statue of Liberty and Times Square.
“Holiday” is produced by Tay Keith and Take A Daytrip. It marks Lil Nas’ first new single in almost two years after he released “Rodeo” featuring Cardi B and Nas, which peaked at No. 22 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. He is expected to perform the new song at a virtual concert this Saturday, November 14th, on the children’s video game Roblox.

In a nod to “Back to the Future”, the trailer, which aired during a football game between the New Orleans Saints and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, sees the “Panini” rapper teleporting to the Wild West. He arrives on a horse in his complete cowboy gear, with his hit “Old Town Road” instrumental playing in the background.
When Santa Claus gets thrown out of the saloon, having had one drink too many, he takes the hat and finds himself being chosen as the new iteration of Santa. He quickly trades his outfit for Santa costume, while his horse turns into a reindeer.

As he takes off on his sleigh, a snippet of “Holiday” is heard playing. “It’s a holiday, I got h**s on h**s and they outta control,” the lyrics go. Michael J. Fox then makes a cameo, reprising his “Back to the Future” character Marty McFly, who warns Nas, “Whatever you do Nas, don’t go to 2020!”
Fox reposted the Jason Koenig-directed trailer on his Twitter page, reiterating his message to Nas in the caption. Christopher Lloyd, known for portraying Dr. Emmett “Doc” Brown in the “Back to the Future” trilogy, also shared the commercial on his own social media page and wrote along with it, “Great scott! Looks like where @lilnasX is going, he doesn’t need roads.”
Holiday is produced by Tay Keith and Take A Daytrip. It marks Nas’ first new single in almost two years. His last single “Rodeo”, which features Cardi B and Nas, peaked at No. 22 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. The song was lifted off his debut EP “7”, which was released in June 2019.

  • Lil Nas X Accepts Invitation to Join Recording Academy Ahead of 2021 Oscars

    WENN

The ‘Old Town Road’ hitmaker is among the new members of the Recording Academy as the organization vows to fight lack of diversity ahead of the 93rd Oscar Awards.
    Jul 10, 2020
AceShowbiz – Lil Nas X and Victoria Monet lead a diverse class of more than 2,300 music professionals invited to join America’s Recording Academy.
The 21-year-old rapper, who has won two of the Academy’s Grammy Awards, expressed his delight at joining the organisation as a new member in a statement posted on Grammy.com.
He said, “I’m so honoured to join the Recording Academy’s membership class of 2020. I’m so excited to officially be a part of the family with so many legends in the industry, and to be a new voice to represent other music creators like me out there.”
Other musicians listed in the class – which is 48 per cent female, 21 per cent African-American, and eight per cent Hispanic – include Victoria Monet, Kiana Lede, Gunna, and Le’Andria Johnson.
In a roundtable with some of the new honourees, existing member John Legend shared, “We can literally be the change that we want to see in the academy. We still need to (be) more diverse… Rather than throw up our hands and say ‘it’s going to be a stodgy, old white guy organization,’ we’re the people that are going to change it.”
The class of 2020 is nearly twice as large as 2019’s, with Recording Academy chiefs determined to transform its membership and boost the profile of previously underrepresented groups.

  • Lil Nas X and Kehlani: Blackout Tuesday Is Dangerous for Black Lives Matter Movement

    WENN

The ”Old Town Road’ hitmaker and the ‘You Know Wassup’ singer agree that the Blackout Tuesday campaign by the music industry is dangerous because it could hinder the real Black Lives Matter activism.
    Jun 3, 2020
AceShowbiz – Lil Nas X and Kehlani have criticised the music industry’s Blackout Tuesday campaign protesting the murder of George Floyd as a distraction from real activism.
Acts including Rihanna and The Rolling Stones are halting social media promotions on Tuesday, Jun 2, 2020 to join the protests against police brutality and racism that have swept the U.S. since Floyd died when Minnesota policeman Derek Chauvin knelt on his neck for eight minutes during an arrest last week.
Record executives, including chiefs at Nas’ label Columbia Records have also backed the campaign – but the “Old Town Road” hitmaker disagrees, calling it “the worst idea ever” in a tweet.
The 21-year-old rapper went on to write that it would have been a better idea for stars and labels to share activist messages and information.
“It’s information that needs to be spread! the movement needs to be pushed forward! not silenced for a day,” he wrote. “I just really think this is the time to push as hard as ever. i don’t think the movement has ever been this powerful. we don’t need to slow it down by posting nothing. we need to spread info and be as loud as ever.”
Making his own suggestion, he added, “Not tryna be announcing but what if we posted donation and petitions links on instagram all at the same time instead of pitch black images,” before expressing fear the blackout images would take over social media hashtags used to discuss the protests.
Kehlani also criticised the campaign as costing companies nothing and co-opting the original #TheShowMustBePaused initiative started by two black women, Jamila Thomas and Brianna Agyemang.
“Tuesdays not a big deal,” she tweeted. “no releases should come out at all for the week s**t maybe for the month. and if they do, these companies need to pledge to giving the Black artists who release ALL THE MONEY MADE FROM IT (sic). f**k it.”

Lil Nas X and Nas' Thrilling 'Rodeo' Music Video Filled With Pop Culture References – Watch!

    [embedded content]

Prior to the release of the visuals, the ‘Old Town Road’ hitmaker shares the inspiration behind the clip, including Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ music video and ‘The Matrix’.
    Feb 7, 2020
AceShowbiz – Lil Nas X and Nas have released a thrilling music video for “Rodeo”. Less than a month after debuting the remix at the 62nd annual Grammy Awards, the “Old Town Road” hitmaker and the “Street Dreams” rapper are treating their devotees with the promo that is jammed-packed with pop culture references.
Unleashed on Thursday, February 6, the clip opens with Lil Nas picking up a phone call in a neon green phone booth. A voice can be heard saying, “Remember me? I want to play a game?” Before he manages to leave the booth, he gets bitten in the neck and soon transforms into a vampire. Stumbling through a suburb, he shows off his dance moves while people around him try to keep him away.
It is not until the 20-year-old embraces his transformation, complete with black leather jumpsuit, dramatic spikes and blinged-out fangs, that his collaborator Nas makes his appearance. Channeling Laurence Fishburne’s Morpheus, the 46-year-old MC offers the “Panini” spitter an option between red and blue pills. Near the end of the video, a group of assassins show up and try to shoot him down.
One day prior to the video release, Lil Nas shared with his Instagram and Twitter followers where he drew inspiration for the visuals of his latest track. On both social media page, he posted a scene capture from Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”, Eddie Murphy and Angela Bassett’s “Vampire in Brooklyn”, Sarah Michelle Gellar’s “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and Keanu Reeves’ “The Matrix”.

Through Twitter, Nas X has also set the record straight about his original collaborator of the track, Cardi B. Shooting down speculations of feud between the two of them, he stressed, “I didn’t ‘kick’ cardi off of rodeo. she couldn’t do the video.” He added, “we cool tho.”
