Oscars 2021: Chloe Zhao and 'Ma Rainey's' Makeup and Hairstyling Team Score Historic Wins

    WENN/Netflix/Avalon

The ‘Nomadland’ helmer is the first Asian woman to win the Best Director prize, while Mia Neal and Jamika Wilson become the first black women to win the Oscar for makeup and hairstyling.

    Apr 26, 2021

    AceShowbiz –
Histories have been made at the 93rd annual Academy Awards which is currently underway. Chloe Zhao, who was nominated alongside Thomas Vinterberg (“Another Round”), David Fincher (“Mank”), Lee Isaac Chung (“Minari”) and Emerald Fennell (“Promising Young Woman”), won the Oscar for Best Director for “Nomadland”.

Zhao is the second only woman to win the Oscar in the category after Kathryn Bigelow won the prize in 2009 for “The Hurt Locker”. She is also the first Asian woman in the Oscar history to win the Best Director prize.

In her speech, she talked about the inherent good in people. “I have always found goodness in the people I met, everywhere I went in the world,” she said. “So this is for anyone who had the faith and the courage to hold on to the goodness in themselves, and to hold on to the goodness in each other no matter how difficult it is to do that. And this is for you, you inspire me to keep going. Thank you inspire me to keep going. Thank you.”

Mia Neal and Jamika Wilson landed another historic win as they have become the first black women to win the Oscar for makeup and hairstyling for “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”. Neal delivered a powerful message in her speech. “I can picture black and Latino and Indigenous trans women, and I know that one day it won’t be unusual or groundbreaking, it will just be normal,” she said.

Bringing the second win for “Ma Rainey’s” that night, Ann Roth scored the Oscar for Best Costume Design. At 89 years old, she has become the oldest woman to ever win an Oscar, but she wasn’t present in person to accept the award.

“Sound of Metal” aptly took home the Oscar for Achievement in Sound, thanks to the works of Nicolas Becker, Jaime Baksht, Michelle Couttolenc, Carlos Cortes and Phillip Bladh. The award was presented by Riz Ahmed, who starred in the movie.

Live-Action Short Film award went to “Two Distant Strangers”, directed by Travon Free and Martin Desmond Roe. Free highlighted police violence on black people in his speech, urging people not to be indifferent to others’ pain. “So I ask you not to be indifferent, don’t be indifferent to our pain,” he said.

At another portion of the night, the Motion Picture Television Fund’s CEO Bob Beacher accepted Jean Hersholt Humanitarian award on behalf of the MPTF for an outstanding contribution to humanitarian causes.

“Nomadland” filmmaker Chloe Zhao has inched ever closer to Oscars victory after making history by securing the top prize at the 2021 Directors Guild of America Awards.

Zhao has been racking up the accolades during the current awards season, and on Saturday (10Apr21), she added the Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film honour to her resume for her work on the Frances McDormand drama.

She becomes only the second female director to claim the prestigious award, following in the footsteps of Kathryn Bigelow, who was saluted for 2008’s “The Hurt Locker”.

Zhao beat out “Minari” ‘s Lee Isaac Chung, “Promising Young Woman” ‘s Emerald Fennell, “Mank” ‘s David Fincher, and”The Trial of the Chicago 7″ ‘s Aaron Sorkin to take home the title, and she used her acceptance speech during the virtual ceremony to heap praise on her fellow nominees.

The Chloe Zhao-directed movie takes home the Best Film title, Best Director, and Best Leading Actress for Frances McDormand at the EE British Academy Film Awards.

    Apr 12, 2021

    AceShowbiz –
Chloe Zhao has become the second female moviemaker in 12 years to win the Best Director gong at the 2021 EE British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs).

Her film “Nomadland”, which stars Frances McDormand as a woman who loses everything in the Great Recession and embarks on a nomadic journey through the American West, also beat out Sarah Gavron’s “Rocks” to take home Best Film, after both movies were tied at seven nominations apiece ahead of Sunday’s (11Apr21) ceremony.

In addition, McDormand was named Best Leading Actress as “Nomadland” was also celebrated for its cinematography.

Zhao became the first female to win the best director title at the event since Kathryn Bigelow who took home the prize in 2009 for war drama “The Hurt Locker”. She was one of four female directors nominated at the 2021 awards.

Zhao dedicated her Best Film award to “the nomadic community who welcomed us into their lives,” adding, “Thank you for showing us that ageing is a beautiful part of life, a journey that we should all cherish and celebrate. How we treat our elders says a lot about our society and we need to do better.”

Elsewhere, Sir Anthony Hopkins claimed the Best Leading Actor prize at the virtual ceremony in London, triumphing over awards season favourite, late actor Chadwick Boseman.

Supporting honours went to Daniel Kaluuya, for “Judas and the Black Messiah”, and 73-year-old “Minari” star Yuh-jung Youn, who expressed her delight that the typically “snobbish” Brits had given her work the seal of approval.

Emerald Fennell was left flustered after her script for “Promising Young Woman” landed the Best Original Screenplay title, but recovered to accept a second award for Outstanding British Film.

Meanwhile, Christopher Hampton and Florian Zeller’s “The Father” was named Best Adapted Screenplay, and Thomas Vinterberg’s “Another Round”, starring Mads Mikkelsen, triumphed in the Best Film Not in the English Language category.

A glamorous Priyanka Chopra Jonas presented the first award of the night, for Best Animated Film, which went to Disney and Pixar’s “Soul”, which also won for Best Original Score.

Bukky Bakray, 19, won the public-voted EE Rising Star Award, and Ang Lee was honoured with the prestigious BAFTA Fellowship, which was presented to him by “Paddington” star Hugh Grant.

The virtual proceedings, hosted by Edith Bowman and Dermot O’Leary from the Royal Albert Hall, began with a tribute to British royal Prince Philip, who passed away on Friday (09Apr21). He was also later remembered in the In Memoriam section alongside Chadwick Boseman, Sean Connery, Christopher Plummer, Ennio George Segal, Irrfan Khan, Nikita Pearl Waligwa, Ben Cross, Sir Ian Holm, Yaphet Kotto, Max Von Sydow, Cicely Tyson, Dave Prowse, Kirk Douglas, Dame Barbara Windsor, Sir Alan Parker, and Dame Olivia De Havilland, among others.

Musical entertainment was provided by British stars Liam Payne and Celeste, who sang her song “Hear My Voice” from “The Trial of the Chicago 7”, and Leslie Odom Jr. perform a transatlantic duet from Los Angeles, with Corinne Bailey Rae, who was at the Royal Albert Hall.

Chloe Zhao and Emerald Fennell Make History With 2021 Oscar Nominations

    WENN

The ‘Nomadland’ director and the ‘Promising Young Woman’ helmer are up for best director as the complete nominations list for the upcoming Academy Awards is announced.

    Mar 16, 2021
AceShowbiz – Chloe Zhao and Emerald Fennell will both compete for best director at the 2021 Academy Awards setting a new record for female auteurs in the category.
The nominations, announced on Monday (15Mar21) by actor-producer Priyanka Chopra Jonas and her husband, singer-songwriter-actor Nick Jonas saw both Zhao’s “Nomadland”, and British talent Fennell’s “Promising Young Woman” selected in the Best Picture category, as well as earning them nods for their direction, breaching a new barrier again for female directors, who have typically been overlooked.
It is the first time in the Academy Awards’ nearly almost 100-year history, more than one female director has been nominated in the best director category.
In total, only five women have been nominated in the best director category, with Kathryn Bigelow, who directed 2010 movie “The Hurt Locker”, the first and only female director to win in the category.
Both films garnered several nominations, with “Nomadland” collecting six including Best Actress for lead Frances McDormand, and Fennell’s “Promising Young Woman” earning a Best Actress nod for Carey Mulligan among its five nominations. While David Fincher helmed “Mank” is the Oscars most nominated movie with 11 nods.
Director Fincher will compete against Zhao, Fennell, Aaron Sorkin for “The Trial of the Chicago 7” – which garnered seven nods – Thomas Vinterberg for movie “Another Round”, and Lee Isaac Chung for “Minari”.
In the Best Actor category, Chadwick Boseman was given another posthumous nod for his role in “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”, alongside his co-star Viola Davis who gets her fourth Oscar nomination, and her second nod for Best Actress.
Also competing for Best Actor is “Mank” leading man Gary Oldman, fellow British stars Anthony Hopkins for “The Father” and Riz Ahmed for “Sound of Metal”, and Steven Yeun for “Minari”.
The Best Actress category is rounded out by first-time nominees, singer Andra Day for “The United States vs. Billie Holiday” and former “The Crown” star Vanessa Kirby for “Pieces of a Woman”.
In a move that may cause some controversy, British star Daniel Kaluuya is nominated in the Best Supporting Actor group for his starring role in “Judas and the Black Messiah”, alongside his co-star LaKeith Stanfield. Also in the supporting actor group are; Sacha Baron Cohen for “The Trial of the Chicago 7”, Leslie Odom Jr. for “One Night in Miami…”, and Paul Raci for “Sound of Metal”.
Glenn Close receives her eighth Oscar nomination for her role in “Hillbilly Elegy”, and will compete against Cohen’s “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” co-star Maria Bakalova, Olivia Colman for “The Father”, Amanda Seyfried for “Mank”, and “Minari” star Yuh-Jung Youn in the Best Supporting Actress category.
Elsewhere Disney’s “Soul” and “Onward” will battle it out for the Animated Movie category, which is rounded out by “Over the Moon”, “Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon”, and “Wolfwalkers”.

    Fox Searchlight Pictures

    Mar 8, 2021
AceShowbiz – “Nomadland” has solidified itself as a strong Oscar contender following its big win at the 26th Critics Choice Awards. The film adaptation of Jessica Bruder’s non-fiction book led the pack of movie winners at the Sunday, March 7 event, nabbing four awards.
