    Golden Globes 2021: 'Nomadland' and 'Borat' Sequel Victorious as Full Movie Winners Are Unveiled

    The Frances McDormand-starrer nabs the coveted prize of Best Motion Picture – Drama, while ‘Borat Subsequent Moviefilm’ is named Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.

    AceShowbiz – The awards were all handed out at the 78th Golden Globe Awards with “Nomadland” and “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” coming out victorious. Both films landed the coveted prizes in the movie categories as they bagged two awards each.
    “Nomadland” was unsurprisingly named Best Motion Picture – Drama, having received similar honors from the National Board of Review, the American Film Institute and Gotham Independent Film Awards among others. It bested other nominees, including “The Father”, “Mank”, “Promising Young Woman” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7”.
    “Nomadland” director Chloe Zhao was additionally picked as Best Director – Motion Picture. She made history as the only second woman to win Best Director prize at the Golden Globes after Barbra Streisand won one in 1984 for “Yentl”.
    Zhao was one of the three women nominated in the Best Director category, with the other two being Emerald Fennell for “Promising Young Woman” and Regina King for “One Night in Miami…”. David Fincher (“Mank”) and Aaron Sorkin (“The Trial of the Chicago 7”) were also vying for the prize.
    Also grabbing two prizes, the “Borat” sequel was hailed as Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, beating out “Hamilton”, “Music”, “Palm Springs” and “The Prom”. Additionally, its lead actor Sacha Baron Cohen won Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, edging out James Corden for “The Prom”, Lin-Manuel Miranda for “Hamilton”, Andy Samberg for “Palm Springs” and Dev Patel for “The Personal History of David Copperfield”.

    Best Motion Picture – Animated went to “Soul”, which took another award for Best Original Score – Motion Picture, thanks to Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross and Jon Batiste’s works. Chadwick Boseman was honored posthumously as Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama for his role in “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”, while Andra Day won the award in the female category for her performance in “The United States vs. Billie Holiday”.
    Rosamund Pike won another big acting award, Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, for her portrayal of Marla Grayson in “I Care a Lot”. Daniel Kaluuya won his first Golden Globe as he was named Best Actor in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture for his role in “Judas and the Black Messiah”, while Jodie Foster got her third in acting category as she won Best Actress in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture for her role in “The Mauritanian”.
    Other winners at the Sunday, February 28 ceremony included “Minari” (Best Motion Picture – Foreign Language), “The Trial of the Chicago 7” (Best Screenplay – Motion Picture) and “The Life Ahead” (Best Original Song – Motion Picture). Jane Fonda was honored with Cecil B. DeMille Award, while Carol Burnett Award was presented with Norman Lear Award.
    Hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, the event also honored the best in TV field.

    'Nomadland' Tops Winners List of 2021 London Critics' Circle Film Awards

    The road movie directed by Chloe Zhao dominates the 41st annual London Critics’ Circle Film Awards by picking up a total of three top honors including Film of the Year.

    AceShowbiz – Chloe Zhao’s road movie “Nomadland” has cemented its place as Oscars Best Film frontrunner after picking up three top honours at the 41st London Critics’ Circle Film Awards on Sunday (07Feb21).
    The movie claimed the Film of the Year while Zhao took home the Screenwriter of the Year prize and her leading lady, Frances McDormand, was named Actress of the Year.
    British drama “Saint Maud” also won three awards – British/Irish Film of the Year, British/Irish Actress of the Year for Morfydd Clark, and Breakthrough British/Irish Filmmaker for writer/director Rose Glass – and Steve McQueen was presented with Director of the Year for his five film series, “Small Axe”. Shaun Parkes won Supporting Actor of the Year for the first drama in the collection, “Mangrove”.

    Riz Ahmed was named British/Irish Actor of the Year for his work in “Sound of Metal” and “Mogul Mowgli”, and the short he wrote, produced and starred in, “The Long Goodbye”, was named British/Irish Short Film of the Year.
    Meanwhile, the late Chadwick Boseman picked up Actor of the Year honours for “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and Maria Bakalova scored the Supporting Actress of the Year gong for her role in “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm”.

    AceShowbiz – “Nomadland”, “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”, and “Never Rarely Sometimes Always” will be facing off for the Best Feature prize at the 2021 Film Independent Spirit Awards
    “Minari” and “First Cow” will also compete for the top honour at the celebration of independent movies.
    Teen pregnancy drama “Never Rarely Sometimes Always” leads all nominees with seven, including Best Director for Eliza Hittman and Best Female Lead for Sidney Flanigan while “Minari”, about a Korean-American family settling into life on a farm in Arkansas, follows with six nods.
    Awards season favourites “Nomadland” and “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” each grabbed five nominations.
    Flanigan will face tough competition for the Best Female Lead award – others featured in the category are Frances McDormand (“Nomadland”), Carey Mulligan (“Promising Young Woman”), Nicole Beharie (“Miss Juneteenth”), Viola Davis (“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”), and Julia Garner (“The Assistant”).
    In contention for Best Male Lead are Riz Ahmed (“Sound of Metal”), Steven Yeun (“Minari”), Rob Morgan (“Bull”), Adarsh Gourav (“The White Tiger”), and the late Chadwick Boseman (“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”).
    Meanwhile, this year’s ceremony will also salute TV projects for the first time, with “Little America”, “Never Have I Ever”, “I May Destroy You”, and “Unorthodox” among the shows recognised in various categories.
    The winners of the 36th Film Independent Spirit Awards will be unveiled during a ceremony in Santa Monica, California on 22 April (21) – the Thursday before the Oscars, breaking a longstanding tradition of taking place on the eve of the Academy Awards.

    AceShowbiz – “Nomadland” has taken another huge stride to possible Oscars gold after picking up the Best Feature honour at the Gotham Awards on Monday night (January 11).
    Chloe Zhao’s acclaimed film, starring Academy Award winner Frances McDormand, beat out “The Assistant”, “First Cow”, “Never Rarely Sometimes Always”, and “Relic” to claim the top prize and the Audience Award, making it a clear Oscars favourite.
    There were also wins for Riz Ahmed, who picked up the Best Actor award for his portrayal of a deaf drummer in “Sound of Metal”, and Nicole Beharie, who beat out Jessie Buckley, Youn Yuh Jung, Carrie Coon, and McDormand for the Best Actress gong.
    It was also a special night for the family of Chadwick Boseman, who was saluted with a posthumous Actor Tribute, alongside his “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” castmate Viola Davis.

    “Moonlight” actor Andre Holland honoured the pair and Boseman’s wife, Taylor Simone Ledward, accepted the “Black Panther” star’s award virtually, stating, “He was blessed to live many lives in his concentrated life. He harnessed the power of letting go and letting God’s love shine through. Thank you for giving Chad these gifts. It’s an honour to receive this award on behalf of my husband.”
    “Chad, thank you. I love you. I am so proud of you. Keep shining your light on us.”
    There were also honours for Steve McQueen, who claimed the Director’s Tribute and Ryan Murphy, who was feted with an Industry Tribute. The Gotham Awards panel also introduced the inaugural Ensemble Tribute, which was given to the cast of “The Trial of the Chicago 7”.

    AceShowbiz – Chloe Zhao’s Oscars Best Picture frontrunner “Nomadland” landed another big award after picking up the National Society of Film Critics’ film of the year on Saturday (09Jan20).
    Zhao also landed the Best Director prize, while her leading lady, Frances McDormand, was named Best Actress for her portrayal of a homeless wanderer.
    Delroy Lindo scored the Best Actor prize for “Da 5 Bloods” while “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” star Maria Bakalova and “Sound of Metal” ‘s Paul Raci claimed the supporting actor and actress honours.

    The victory at the National Society of Film Critics awards came after the movie lost the Best Film title to “Promising Young Woman” at 19th annual Columbus Film Critics Association awards.
