Grammys Announces Several Changes After The Weeknd Drama

    Instagram

The new changes arrive after The Weeknd publicly called out the organization for snubbing him as her received zero nominations at this year’s ceremony over his successful hit ‘Blinding Lights’.

    May 1, 2021

    AceShowbiz –
The Recording Academy is making changes after the backlash from The Weeknd and many other musicians. According to a new report, Grammys has changed a few rhings for the next event including removing secret voting committess.

Among the alterations are “Elimination of Nominations Review Committees In General and Genre Fields” and “Reduction In Number of Categories Voter May Vote”. Additionally, two new categories are now added (Best Global Music Performance–Global Music Field and Best Musica Urbana Album–Latin Music Field). The next event will also show adjustments which will create less controversial craft categories that involve production and presentation.

“It’s been a year of unprecedented, transformational change for the Recording Academy, and I’m immensely proud to be able to continue our journey of growth with these latest updates to our Awards process,” said Harvey Mason Jr., Interim CEO of the Recording Academy. “This is a new Academy, one that is driven to action and that has doubled down on the commitment to meeting the needs of the music community.”

He went on saying, “While change and progress are key drivers of our actions, one thing will always remain — the Grammy Award is the only peer-driven and peer-voted recognition in music. We are honored to work alongside the music community year-round to further refine and protect the integrity of the Awards process.”

The new changes arrive after The Weeknd publicly called out the organization for snubbing him as her received zero nominations at this year’s ceremony, despite his single “Blinding Lights” being the biggest hit to date this year. “The Grammys remain corrupt. You owe me, my fans, and the industry transparency…,” he tweeted after the nominations were announced on November 24, 2020.

He also hinted that he had already been planning his Grammy performance for weeks until he learned of the nominations snub. “Collaboratively planning a performance for weeks to not being invited? In my opinion zero nominations = you’re not invited!” he wrote in another tweet.

In my opinion zero nominations = you’re not invited!” he wrote in another tweet. The Weeknd also stated he would never submit his music to or attend the Grammys ever again.

Mason later reacted to the complain, saying, “There were a record number of submissions in this unusual and competitive year. We understand that The Weeknd is disappointed at not being nominated. I was surprised and can empathize with what he’s feeling. His music this year was excellent, and his contributions to the music community and broader world are worthy of everyone’s admiration.”

The Weeknd Dominates 2021 Billboard Music Awards With 16 Nominations

    WENN

The ‘Blinding Lights’ hitmaker leads the nominees for the upcoming Billboard Music Awards by grabbing a total of 16 nods including the coveted title of Top Artist.

    Apr 30, 2021

    AceShowbiz –
R&B star The Weeknd will be the artist to beat at the 2021 Billboard Music Awards after landing a total of 16 nominations.

The singer will compete for prizes including Top Artist and Top Male Artist, with both categories featuring The Weeknd pitted against Drake, Juice WRLD, and Pop Smoke.

Rapper DaBaby is the second most-nominated with 11 nods, ahead of the late Pop Smoke with 10.

Leading the female artists are Gabby Barrett and Megan Thee Stallion with nine and seven mentions, respectively.

Drake is on course to make Billboard history at the ceremony if he emerges triumphant in any of the seven categories he is shortlisted for, as he is already the artist with the most wins of all time with 27 gongs to his name.

Meanwhile, disgraced country star Morgan Wallen is in the running for six categories thanks to the huge success of his recent release, “Dangerous: The Double Album”, but he won’t be invited to participate in the ceremony due to the N-word controversy which derailed his rising career in late January (21).

“Morgan Wallen is a finalist this year based on charting,” reads a statement issued by producers at dick clark productions. “As his recent conduct does not align with our core values, we will not be including him on the show in any capacity (performing, presenting, accepting).”

“It is heartening and encouraging to hear that Morgan is taking steps in his anti-racist journey and starting to do some meaningful work. We plan to evaluate his progress and will consider his participation in future shows.”

The winners, based on U.S. chart data, will be unveiled at a televised event in Los Angeles on 23 May (21).

The Weeknd Excited to Release New Song as NFT

    WENN

The ‘Save Your Tears’ hitmaker announces his first-ever NFT drop as he releases his limited edition art along with a new song in a non-fungible token marketplace.

    Apr 2, 2021

    AceShowbiz –
The Weeknd’s first NFT drop will launch on Saturday (03.03.21).

The 31-year-old star – real name Abel Tesfaye – took to Twitter at the weekend (27-28Mar21) to explain that his latest release will be a little different and that his next song will be up for grabs in “NFT space” only.

He wrote, “new song living in NFT space. coming soon…”

The singer added, “p.s. this chapter isn’t quite done yet …still tying some loose ends (sic).”

The Weeknd has since updated his fans, revealing his limited edition art and the track is available via Nifty Gateway, “the premier marketplace for Nifties,” which are “digital items you can truly own,” according to their website.

The “Save Your Tears” hitmaker tweeted, “Excited to announce that my first NFT drop is taking place on Saturday at 2:00 pm EST on @niftygateway.”

“The collection will feature new music and limited edition art. I developed the artwork with Strange Loop Studios.”

The Weeknd has a 24-hour auction for “an exclusive 1-of-1 piece of art” with his new song.

And whoever ends up winning will become the only owner of the track in the world.

The “Blinding Lights” hitmaker said in a statement, “Blockchain is democratising an industry that has historically been kept shut by the gatekeepers.”

“I’ve always been looking for ways to innovate for fans and shift this archaic music biz and seeing NFTs allowing creators to be seen and heard more than ever before on their terms is profoundly exciting.”

“I intend to contribute to this movement and can see that very soon it will be weaved into the music industry’s mechanics.”

NFTs (non-fungible tokens) are an emerging market within blockchain where single-impression unique digital art and goods known as the ‘token’ can be sold.

Grammys Is 'Disappointed' by The Weeknd's Declaration of Eternal Boycott, Vows to 'Improve'

    Instagram

The Recording Academy’s interim chief executive Harvey Mason Jr. responds after the ‘Blinding Lights’ singer said he will never submit his music to the Grammys again.

    Mar 12, 2021
AceShowbiz – The Recording Academy isn’t all too pleased when it is at the receiving end of a snub. Following The Weeknd’s decision to boycott the Grammys for good, the Academy’s boss has admitted that they’re “disappointed.”
“We’re all disappointed when anyone is upset,” interim Academy CEO Henry Mason Jr. said in a statement in response to The Weeknd’s eternal boycott. Vowing to make a change, he added, “But I will say that we are constantly evolving. And this year, as in past years, we are going to take a hard look at how to improve our awards process, including the nomination review committees.”
On Thursday, March 11, just days ahead of the 63rd annual Grammy Awards, The Weeknd once again spoke of his disdain at the award show. “Because of the secret committees, I will no longer allow my label to submit my music to the Grammys,” he told the New York Times.

The Canadian artist was standing by his stance after he was understandably upset due to the Grammys snub. The 31-year-old received zero nominations at the upcoming ceremony, despite his single “Blinding Lights” being the biggest hit to date this year.
The Academy later responded to The Weeknd’s complaint, with Mason Jr. saying, “There were a record number of submissions in this unusual and competitive year. We understand that The Weeknd is disappointed at not being nominated. I was surprised and can empathize with what he’s feeling. His music this year was excellent, and his contributions to the music community and broader world are worthy of everyone’s admiration.”
Addressing speculation that The Weeknd being snubbed had anything to do with his Super Bowl LV performance, Mason Jr. stated, “We were thrilled when we found out he would be performing at the upcoming Super Bowl and we would have loved to have him also perform on the Grammy stage the weekend before. To be clear, voting in all categories ended well before The Weeknd’s performance at the Super Bowl was announced, so in no way could it have affected the nomination process. All Grammy nominees are recognized by the voting body for their excellence, and we congratulate them all.”

The Weeknd Will No Longer Submit His Music to Grammys Following Nomination Snub

    WENN

The ‘Blinding Lights’ hitmaker hits back at the Recording Academy again, revealing that he bans his label from submitting his music to the Grammy committees.

    Mar 12, 2021
AceShowbiz – The Weeknd is so ticked off about his Grammys snub he has instructed his label bosses to stop submitting his music for consideration.
Music fans were stunned when the singer failed to pick up a single nod for music’s big night, despite breaking records and winning acclaim for his album “After Hours” and single “Blinding Lights” in 2020.
Following his snub, an angry The Weeknd took to social media to attack Grammys bosses, stating, “The Grammys remain corrupt. You owe me, my fans and the industry transparency…”
He later admitted he was “blindsided” by the snub and now he has chosen to boycott the Recording Academy’s awards shows indefinitely.

      See also…

“I will no longer allow my label to submit my music to the Grammys… because of the secret committees,” he tells the New York Times.
Meanwhile, the singer’s manager, Wassim Slaiby, admits he and his label bosses still haven’t been able to get a straight answer as to why The Weeknd was left off the nominations list, “We were many weeks and dozens of calls in with the Grammy team around Abel’s (The Weeknd) performance right up to the day of nominations being announced. We were scratching our heads in confusion and wanted answers.”
As a result of the snub, the pop star pulled out of performing at the Grammys.
He’s not the only star taking aim at the Grammys bosses this week – new dad Zayn Malik also lashed out after his music failed to make the nominations list.
The former One Direction star scolded Recording Academy officials via social media, writing, “F**k the grammys and everyone associated. Unless you shake hands and send gifts, there’s no nomination considerations. Next year I’ll send you a basket of confectionary (sic).”

The Weeknd Makes Hot 100 History by Staying at Top 10 for a Year With 'Blinding Lights'

Having been the Billboard chart’s biggest hit of 2020, the second single off the Canadian singer’s ‘After Hours’ lands behind Olivia Rodrigo’s ‘Drivers License’ and Cardi B’s ‘Up’.

    Mar 9, 2021
AceShowbiz – The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights” has become the first hit to spend a year in the Billboard Hot 100 top 10. As Olivia Rodrigo’s “Drivers License” leads the U.S. countdown for an eighth week, the Canadian pop star is stealing all the headlines at number three by chalking up 52 weeks in the top flight.
“Blinding Lights”, which was the Hot 100’s biggest hit of 2020, hit the top 10 in February, 2020, spent four weeks at number one in April and May, and has stayed in the top 10 ever since, bar two weeks in December when the track dipped to numbers 11 and 18.
The Weeknd now has 13 more weeks in the top 10 with one hit than Post Malone, who notched up 39 weeks with “Circles” in 2019 and 2020. It has also extended its top five run to 43 weeks – 16 more than its nearest rival.

      See also…

Meanwhile, Rodrigo’s “Drivers License” becomes one of only seven tracks to spend its first eight weeks on the chart at the top after debuting at number one in January.
Cardi B’s “Up” stays put at two on the new countdown, while Ariana Grande’s “34+35” and Chris Brown and Young Thug’s “Go Crazy” complete the new top five.

Despite “Blinding Lights” success on music chart, The Weeknd failed to secure a single nomination at the 2021 Grammy Awards. In response to the snub, he told Billboard magazine, “If you were like, ‘Do you think the Grammys are racist?’ I think the only real answer is that in the last 61 years of the GRAMMYs, only 10 Black artists have won album of the year. I don’t want to make this about me. That’s just a fact.”

Artist of the Week: The Weeknd

The ‘Can’t Feel My Face’ hitmaker hits a touchdown on multiple music charts following his solid live performance at the Super Bowl LV Halftime show in Tampa, Florida.

    Feb 15, 2021
AceShowbiz – The Weeknd is riding high on the success of his Super Bowl LV halftime show performance. The 30-year-old Canadian musician returned to multiple charts following his solid gig during the football game at the Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida.
His tracks gained new traction with 385% increase in the U.S. sales and 41% surge in the streams. Songs across his entire catalog sold 36,500 copies and generated 48.9 million on-demand streams with singles “Blinding Lights” and “Save Your Tears” on the lead.
2019’s massive hit “Blinding Lights” sit at No. 2 on Billboard Global 200, climbed up to No. 3 on Hot 100, and ruled Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. Meanwhile, more recent single “Save Your Tears” reached the top 10 for the first time on Hot 100 since its August 2020 release.

On top of that, days before the highly-anticipated Super Bowl, The Weeknd broke record with his greatest hits album. “The Highlights”, released Friday before the Sunday game earlier this month, became the most streamed album of all time on Spotify.
Despite the hurdles due to strict protocols amid the ongoing Covid-19, The Weeknd didn’t disappoint with his 13-minute live performance at the Super Bowl. The production was top notch and he wowed football fanatics with his vocal chops as he delivered a slick medley of his hit singles like “Starboy”, “The Hills”, and “Can’t Feel My Face”.
The singer allegedly spent a whopping $7 million of his own money for the show. Nearly 100 million people around the world tuned in to watch the gig during the break at the annual football championship game between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Kansas City Chiefs on February 7.
The making of the show, which involved officials at Jay-Z’s Roc Nation firm and Jesse Collins, the first black executive producer of the event, will be unfolded in a TV documentary. Directed by Emmy nominee filmmaker Nadia Hallgren, 90-minute film “The Show” is due to debut on Showtime later this year.
