Tom Hardy looks unrecognisable as Al Capone in 'hard to watch' Netflix movie

In his most recent motion picture, Tom Hardy plays the role of notorious gangster Al Capone seeing out his final days as he battles with dementia and the constant memories of his twisted past.

Unfortunately, the film did not go down well with viewers who have dismissed the flick as a “waste of time”, claiming Capone is an “awful film”.

The film solely focuses on the last year of the gangster’s life, spent at home in Florida after previously enduring a decade in prison.

Despite his long list of alleged heinous acts, the reason Capone was behind bars for 10 years was due to tax evasion, originally meant to serve 11 years his sentence was cut short due to his decaying health.

Though Capone was aged just 48 when he finally succumbed to his illnesses Palm Island, Florida in January 1947, Hardy still had to wear plenty of make up to ensure he appeared older than his actual age of 43.

Hardy’s depiction of Capone see’s him struggle to come to terms with his gangster past, tormented by fleeting memories while other scenes show him forced to wear adult diapers after soiling himself.

Following its release on streaming service Netflix, Twitter was rife with criticism towards the film, with one user describing it as “1.45mins of my life I will never get back. Love Tom Hardy but that was just hard work (sic).”

Another user claimed: “Don’t waste your time watching #Capone. Tom Hardy is brilliant but the story and everything else. Meh.”

One viewer simple bemoaned that Hardy was too difficult to understand, tweeting: “Watching Tom Hardy in Capone and I may need subtitles.”

Without beating around the bush, one user stated: “Watched the new ‘Capone’ movie last night. Actually one of the worst films I have seen.

“I like Tom Hardy as an actor and enjoy the ‘gangster’ genre. But this was awful. Gave up after an hour. Avoid…”

Upon his admittance into federal prison in Atlanta, Capone was diagnosed with syphilis and gonorrhea. His health only declined throughout his 10-year stay.

In 1938, Capone was diagnosed with neurosyphilis – syphilis of the brain, which rendered his mental state so feeble by 1946 he was thought to have the mentality of a 12-year-old child.

Linda Cardellini stars alongside Hardy in the biopic as Capone’s wife Mae, while Jack Lowden is FBI Agent Crawford, Matt Dillon is Johnny and Kyle MacLachlan features as Karlock.
