Coronation Street producer Iain MacLeod has confirmed a “dark and dangerous” secret for newly arrived Stephen Reid, which leaves his mother Audrey Roberts in huge peril.
Stephen, who grew up in Canada, recently arrived back in Weatherfield from Milan where he had been running a business – but hints have been scattered across the cobbles that he could be in significant money troubles.
With fans already suspicious of Stephen’s motive, it won’t come as much of a surprise that Stephen has a few aces up his sleeve.

Speaking to Daily Star and other press, Iain confirmed: “Desperate is the word [to describe Stephen], and he will continue to get more and more desperate and more and more dark as the story unfolds.
“We definitely brought him back with a slightly different spin than the one we’ve seen before – the beauty of this character is that he’s got this huge longevity through his connection to the show and this heritage family, but actually he’s a bit of a blank canvas.
“If you think back through his archive scenes we don’t really know a lot about him. So we thought, well actually if we’re going to fill in those blanks and learn more about him, shouldn’t we make him dark, dangerous, scheming?”
The soap boss continued: “Our viewers are so canny as well. As soon as he arrived everyone was like bang I’ve got him marked, he’s going to be a wrong ‘un, and they’ll prove to be right in no small measure.
“I’m excited to see the audience’s reaction when they grasp that he’s every bit as desperate and dangerous as they guessed when he first returned!”
And he was quick to warn that fans are correct to worry about Stephen’s mum Audrey, as the stakes are only getting higher.
Iain elaborated: “I will always worry about Audrey, I think any Coronation Street fan should and does worry about Audrey. Especially because she’s quite fragile at the moment in terms of what we’ve seen on screen recently.

“She’s attempted to take her own life and that makes her peculiarly vulnerable to Stephen because she’s clinging onto him as something positive, the light at the end of the tunnel for her emotionally – and he’s really not that.
“But Audrey obviously will be a large part of this story. She won’t come to be in any physical jeopardy, I should say, but emotionally the stakes for her are incredibly high as she’s put all of her maternal eggs in Stephen’s basket.
“She definitely stands to have her heart broken in a fairly sizeable way across the course of this story.”
He added: “Audrey is mistrusting [the rest of her family] and throwing her lot in with the person she should be trusting the least.”
Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8pm on ITV.
