Actor and comedian John Bird has died aged 86.
Bird’s representatives confirmed he died peacefully on Christmas Eve, almost nine years since his comedy partner John Fortune passed away.
The actor was best known for his work with Rory Bremner and John Bird in Channel 4’s satirical TV series Bremner, Bird and Fortune.
The show ran for 16 series and was nominated for several Bafta TV Awards.
Bremner, the last surviving member of the trio, took to his Twitter with a heartfelt statement calling Bird “one of the brilliant of satirists”.
He penned: “Deeply saddened to hear that the great John Bird has left us. One of the most modest of men and most brilliant of satirists. And one of the last surviving pillars of the anti-establishment.
“If you do one thing today, watch one of his interview sketches with John Fortune and ask yourself if it’s ever been more beautifully done.
“I used to watch from the wings and marvel at how the two friends made it look so effortless, so blissfully funny, their skill and enjoyment in the moment making light of the seriously detailed research that went into each piece.”
Fans flocked to Twitter to share their sadness over Bird’s sad death as one penned: “That is sad. The two Johns were brilliant together, and the shows you did with them showcased all your talents. Such an intelligent comedian.”
Another added: “John Bird had an immense talent to look deadly serious while saying some of the most bizarrely funny things. RIP.”
