Legendary 90s pop singer unveils major career U-turn as headteacher in Dubai

An iconic pop star legend has opted to trade the limelight for the classroom as a headteacher.

Lisa Scott-Lee was part of one of the biggest pop groups of the 1990s – Steps, alongside Ian “H” Watkins, Claire Richards, Lee Latchford-Evans and Faye Tozer.

The five-man band dominated the charts after the band was formed in 1997.

Some of the biggest tracks the group had included “Tragedy”, “5678” and “Deeper Shade of Blue”.

But after years of chart success, Steps went their separate ways in 2001.

Since then, Lisa – now aged 47 – has chosen to put her skills to good use as she works as headteacher in Dubai.

Scott-Lee had a fleeting solo career after Steps broke up, but later chose to move her family to the Middle Eastern super-city in 2011.

After living in Dubai for three years, Lisa – alongside hubby and former Hear’Say singer Johnny Shentall – formally opened the Dubai Academy of Performing Arts in 2014.

The school trains younger children and teens into passionate performers who aim to chase their dreams in the acting and music business.

According to the most figures, Lisa’s school currently teaches around 600 pupils aged between 3 and 18, with the school itself having a 500-seat theatre.

Lisa admitted that despite her huge musical career, being a headteacher of a school was one of the pair’s biggest aspirations.

Writing on the school’s website, Lisa wrote: “Since meeting back in 1999 when working together on the very first Steps tour, and with us both being professional singers and dancers, Johnny and I have always dreamed of owning our very own Performing Arts school, providing a professional standard of technical classes, combined with regular opportunities to perform in Theatre and professional events and shows.”

But despite her choice to be a headteacher, Lisa admitted she still likes to perform herself, as she revives her career with her old band.

Steps made a big burst back onto the scene in both 2017 and 2022, where they released the Platinum Collection – which later would go on to be their fourth No. 1 album.

However, Lisa’s eyes are firmly on her new business in Dubai.

She added that by both her and hubby Johnny being trained singers and dancers, it makes the duo better teachers to their pupils.

Lisa joked that she and Johnny regularly argue on whether the pair should be teaching Steps songs to her kids.

“I was hoping they would all want to learn Tragedy, and he was like, no! The students often come to me after a weekend and say, we were watching Steps at the weekend, we watched you in concert,” she said.

“It is flattering, and if I can help children become interested in the performing arts, then I’m doing my job right”.
