    Darius Rucker Talks Struggles as Black Country Singer: I'm Still Trying to Get on the Radio

    Despite being more than 30 years into his career, the former Hootie and The Blowfish frontman reveals that he still feels like starting over every time he puts out a single.

    AceShowbiz – Darius Rucker still struggles to get airplay on country stations that won’t play his music because he’s black.
    The 54-year-old “Wagon Wheel” singer and former Hootie & The Blowfish frontman tells People he’s “still trying to get on the radio” – more than 30 years into his career.
    “I’m begging (for radio play),” he explains, of having to work hard every time he releases new material. “You’re praying that it (song) does something, and it’s still the same thing. So, I still don’t feel like I’ve made it,” says the hitmaker, adding that “a lot of the bigger stars don’t have to call every radio station.”
    “I still got to be on every radio station. I still got to do all the work, and do all the stuff that you have to do to get your song to move (in) the charts. So I just feel like every time I put out a single, I feel like I’m starting over.”

    Darius also recounted some of the disheartening responses he has received to his records.
    “The first time I walked into (a country radio station) – nobody said they wouldn’t play it,” he said.
    “What was said was, ‘I don’t think my audience will accept a black country singer.’ Just like that. ‘I love the song. I think it’s country. Love it. I’m going to play it tomorrow, but I don’t think my audience will accept a black country singer’,” adds the “Come Back Song” star.
    “I go, ‘Wow. Really? I thought music was notes and words and chords. I didn’t know music was colour. I found that out today.'”
    It’s not all bad news for Darius, though. He and Reba McEntire will co-host the CMA Awards airing live at 8 P.M. ET on Wednesday (November 11) from Nashville, Tennessee.

      Set to co-host the big show with Reba McEntire from Nashville, Tennessee on November 11, the ‘Wagon Wheel’ hitmaker reacts to question if the stars would perform in front of real fans.

      AceShowbiz – Singer Darius Rucker has confused fans by suggesting the 2020 Country Music Association Awards will feature a live audience.
      The “Wagon Wheel” hitmaker will co-host the big show with Reba McEntire from Nashville, Tennessee on November 11, when artists including Maren Morris, Miranda Lambert, and Luke Combs will all take the stage at the Music City Center.
      Reports in September indicated there would be no fans at the annual event, due to coronavirus concerns, but during a TV appearance on Wednesday, November 4, Rucker appeared to indicate otherwise.
      Asked if he and his fellow country stars would be performing in front of real devotees, he smiled on America’s “Live with Kelly and Ryan”, “Yeah, we’re really proud.”
      “I’m really excited, just blown away by how the social distancing (will work) and how careful everybody’s being, all the performers will be there, the nominees will be there,” he continued.

      “Everyone will be social distanced and spread out and it will be the first time really the country music family has been (together) in one room all year.”

      Rucker was announced as McEntire’s co-host last month, but the singer feared he was in trouble when he first got the call asking if he’d be interesting in fronting the prizegiving with the country legend, a four-time host.
      “My manager… said, ‘Are you sitting down?’,” he shared. “My first thought was, ‘Oh my goodness… what have I done?’ But it was to do this…, so it was awesome.”
      Rucker is working on delivering “something really special” with McEntire for the big night, a collaboration they are both “really excited about”, while he will be sharing the stage with Lady A (Lady Antebellum), too: “We’re going to do Beers and Sunshine.”
      The CMA Awards will air live at 8 pm ET next Wednesday.

      Reba McEntire to Share Hosting Duty With Darius Rucker at 2020 CMA Awards

      The ‘Back to God’ singer promises the 54th annual Country Music Association Awards will be an energetic and fun one, while the ex-Hootie and the Blowfish frontman hopes for a duet.

      AceShowbiz – Reba McEntire and Darius Rucker will be co-hosting the 54th annual Country Music Association Awards on 11 November.
      Reba has previously hosted the prizegiving four times, but the former Hootie & The Blowfish frontman has never fronted the big show.

      Rucker reveals he’s studying McEntire’s past shows to get a feel for the job, adding, “I’ve got Reba to lean on, so I’m gonna do my best and I know that if I need anything she’s gonna be there for me.”
      Reba reveals there will be an audience at the event, unlike the recent Academy of Country Music Awards, which was staged in Nashville, Tennessee without a crowd.

      “There will be people that we will get to sing to, talk to,” she explains. “It will be energetic, fun; everybody’s gonna get dressed up just like we always have and get to present awards to folks who have had a wonderful year, despite the COVID and everything else that’s been going on.”

      The co-hosts aren’t giving anything away about the planned performances, but Rucker admits he has always dreamed of duetting with Reba.
      “I would love to do anything I can with this extremely talented woman,” he tells “Good Morning America”.
      Miranda Lambert is leading the nominations at the 2020 CMA Awards with seven, including the coveted Entertainer of the Year and Female Vocalist of the Year. Luke Combs trails behind with six nods, also eying the Entertainer of the Year prize in addition to be named in Male Vocalist of the Year category.
