The Weeknd Posts Biggest Debut of 2020 on Billboard 200 With 'After Hours'

The ‘Blinding Lights’ singer’s fourth studio album launches at the top of the U.S. albums chart with 444,000 equivalent album units, marking his personal weekly best.
    Mar 30, 2020
AceShowbiz – The Weeknd is getting some good news amid the bleak time for show business due to the coronavirus crisis. The Canadian singer’s latest album “After Hours” had a successful start, debuting atop the Billboard 200 chart for the week ending March 26.
The fourth studio album from the 30-year-old R&B singer, whose real name is Abel Makkonen Tesfaye, raked in 444,000 equivalent album units in the U.S. alone in its first week, posting the biggest week for any album in 2020. The sum additionally marks his personal weekly best.
The album’s first week total of 444,000 equivalent album units comprises 275,000 in album sales, 163,000 in SEA units and 6,000 in TEA units. The album’s SEA sum equates to 220.7 million on-demand streams of the set’s tracks in its first week. The streaming sum alone would have earned The Weeknd the No. 1 debut even if he hadn’t sold a single physical copy.
Meanwhile, former two-week champion Lil Uzi Vert’s “Eternal Atake” falls to No. 2 with additional 115,000 equivalent album units, or down 53% from last week. Another former No. 1, Lil Baby’s “My Turn”, also drops one spot to No. 3 with 60,000 equivalent album units (down 22%), while Bad Bunny’s “YHLQMDLG” slides from from No. 3 to No. 4 with 51,000 units (down 26%).
Conan Gray’s debut studio album “Kid Krow” opens at No. 5 with 49,000 equivalent album units. Of that sum, 37,000 were in album sales, thanks in part to the concert/ticket album sale redemption offer with his tour late last year, and merchandise/album bundles. Previously, the 21-year-old singer/songwriter entered Billboard 200 with his debut EP, “Sunset Season”, which debuted and peaked at No. 118 on the December 1, 2018-dated tally.
Roddy Ricch’s “Please Excuse Me for Being Antisocial” holds on to No. 6 with 43,000 equivalent album units (down 13%), while Post Malone’s “Hollywood’s Bleeding” rises 8-7 with 38,000 units, despite seeing a 8% slide in sales. Jhene Aiko’s “Chilombo” climbs up three spots to No. 8 with 37,000.
In the wake of Kenny Rogers’ passing on March 20, his greatest hits collection “The Best of Kenny Rogers: Through the Years” enters the Billboard 200 chart for the first time since its release in 1983. It debuts at No. 9 with 32,000 equivalent album units, with 10,000 of that sum in album sales.
Closing out the top 10 is the soundtrack to “Frozen II”, which holds steady on the spot with 31,000 equivalent album units, or down only 1% from last week.

The Weeknd's Fans Thank Bella Hadid for Being Muse of His New Album

    Instagram

The Weeknd himself has confirmed that ‘After Hours’ is about the pain of a heartbreak as he hints in a new interview that he copes with his pain by staying in home and making music.
    Mar 20, 2020
AceShowbiz – The Weeknd excites fans with his new album, “After Hours”, which was released on Friday, March 20. The new set saw Abel Tesfaye, the singer’s real name, singing his hearts out about post-relationship in several songs, prompting fans to think that he was referring to his ex Bella Hadid.
In a song titled “Escape From L.A.”, Abel sings, “She got Chrome Hearts hanging from her neck.” Many believed that it was about Bella and the same streetwear brands that the model has done multiple collaborations with.
Additionally, Abel appeared to hint at their heated moment when they were having sex in a studio. “She closed the door and then she locked it/ For me, for me/ We had sex in the studio/ Nobody walked in,” the lyrics read.
After listening to the new album, a fan tweeted, “Damn I can feel Abel’s pain. this is 100% an album for Bella hadid.” Echoing the theory, another fan said, “Escape from LA is inspired by bella hadid.. chrome hearts????? oh yes abel we know you love her.”
Some others believed that the Canadian star put a sound of Bella’s laugh in a song titled “Snowchild”. “Is that Bella’s laugh in Snowchild? Lol My boy’s in love fr,” a fan wrote.
The Weeknd himself has confirmed that “After Hours” is about the pain of a heartbreak. Sharing his way to cope with his pain, the “Starboy” hitmaker told CR Men prior to the album release, “I don’t like to leave my house too much. It’s a gift and a curse, but it helps me give undivided attention to my work.”
“Even when I’m not working, I’m always somehow still working. It distracts from the loneliness, I guess,” he added. “I feel confident with where I’m taking this [new] record. There’s also a very committed vision and character being portrayed, and I get to explore a different side of me that my fans have never seen.”
Addressing how people interpret his music, The Weeknd shared, “I try not to read too many reviews, especially if it’s negative, but I never made ‘My Dear Melancholy’ with the intent on saying f**k you to anybody. It was just how I felt at the time. The sonic environment felt fitting for how I wanted to tell that story. I feel like I have sonic ADD, and I can’t just stick to one sound, and I feel like it irritates a lot of listeners, but it’s just how my mind works.”

Elsewhere on the song, the Canadian singer also expresses his wish to reconcile with his former lover and promises, ‘This time, I won’t break your heart.’
    Feb 19, 2020
AceShowbiz – The Weeknd has continued the promotion for his highly-anticipated album “After Hours”. On Tuesday, February 18, the Canadian star unleashed the title track off the album that got fans speculating whether he is singing about his ex-girlfriend Bella Hadid.
The song finds The Weeknd, whose real name is Abel Makkonen Tesfaye, addressing a relationship that ended in heartbreak and expressing how he desires a reconciliation. “Sorry that I broke your heart, your heart/ I said, baby/ I’ll treat you better than I did before/ I’ll hold you down and not let you go/ This time, I won’t break your heart,” he sings in the chorus.
Elsewhere on the song, The Weeknd also admits to hoping to start a family with his former lover should they ever get back. “I won’t just leave/ This time, I’ll never leave,” he rhymes. “I wanna share babies/ Protection, we won’t need.”

Considering his recent split from Bella, many were convinced that “After Hours” is about the Victoria’s Secret model. “Bella heading to Abel’s place after hearing after hours,” someone said along with a video of a child riding a motorbike in a high speed. Meanwhile, one other believed that the exes would get back together after listening to the song.
“After Hours is literally an apology letter to Bella Hadid,” another wrote, as a fourth individual begged the sister of Gigi Hadid to “go back to Abel after hours is making me cry.” One more person still wasn’t sure and asked, “Okay but the real question must be asked….. is After Hours about Miss Bella Hadid.”
The Weeknd has yet to respond to the speculation.
“After Hours” is the third promotional song for his upcoming album, following “Heartless” and “Blinding Lights”. It is set to hit the stores on March 20.

The Weeknd Unveils Title of New Album Through Trippy Trailer

    WENN/Instar

Prior to announcing the title of his upcoming album, the Canadian singer has released two singles, ‘Heartless’ and ‘Blinding Lights’, which are performing well on music charts.
    Feb 14, 2020
AceShowbiz – The Weeknd has officially announced the title of his upcoming fourth album. On Thursday, February 13, the Canadian singer made use of his Instagram account to let out a trippy trailer wherein he unveiled that his latest work will be known as “After Hours”.
The CGI effect-filled video saw the 29-year-old driving through a tunnel into a city in a flashy convertible. The cityscape around him turned upside down as he sped down a long highway. His famous R&B sound played in the background. The album title was spelled out in red and blue letters slowly after the city lights got blurred and a storm raged.
The teaser has successfully driven fans wild with anticipation. One gushed, “I can’t imagine how this fandom will go if he drops the album tmr.” Another admitted, “I literally got goosebumps all over my body no joke.” A third raved, “HOLY S**T YEE I AM SO EXCITED OH MY GOD,” and a fourth exclaimed, “THE WAY I JUST DIED AND CAME BACK TO LIFE.”
It is still unclear when “After Hours” will be released, but the follow-up record to 2016’s “Starboy” is led by two singles, “Heartless” and “Blinding Lights”. Both songs have performed well on music charts. “Heartless” debuted at No. 32 on Billboard’s Hot 100 in early December. It went on to top the music chart on its second week, making it The Weeknd’s fourth U.S. No. 1 song.
“Blinding Lights”, in the meantime, has given The Weeknd his first ever chart-topping single in the British pop charts. It dethroned Roddy Ricch’s “The Box” on February 7, and showed domination over Lewis Capaldi’s “Before You Go”, Dua Lipa’s “Don’t Start Now”, and Eminem and Juice WRLD’s “Godzilla”.
Outside of music, The Weeknd made an appearance in “Uncut Gems”, which stars Adam Sandler. Speaking of the singer’s brief presence in the crime thriller film, co-director Josh Sadie told Variety, “He’s a friend of ours, and he’s a real cinephile. Real cinephile. Like, one of his favorite filmmakers is (David) Cronenberg, and that makes sense, because he’s from Toronto. But he watches a lot of movies.”
