David Bowie smuggled cocaine into drug treatment facility for pal Iggy Pop

Iggy Pop was admitted to a treatment facility in 1975 after the disbandment of The Stooges, which turned his life upside down.

He found himself emerged in a life of cocaine while living in Los Angeles, admitting he once “had a binge on MDMA,” in the 70s and took ketamine at a festive.

Following his drug use, Iggy, whose real name is James Newell Osterberg Jr, chose to check himself into UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute in a bid to get clean.

“By 1975, I was totally into drugs, and my willpower had been vastly depleted. But still, I had the brains to commit myself to a hospital,” said Iggy.

While staying at the facility, the now 73-year-old was visited on multiple occasions by pal and fellow rocker, David Bowie.

It was reported in David Bowie’s 2012 book, The Golden Years by Roger Griffin, that the Ziggy Stardust legend visited the treatment facility dressed in a spacesuit, demanding “to see Jimmy,” with staff being so starstruck – he was allowed in.

Speaking to Blender in 2002, Bowie, who died in 2016 said: “If I remember right, it was me and Dennis Hopper. We trooped into the hospital with a load of drugs for him. This was very much a leave-your-drugs-at-the-door hospital.

“We were out of our minds, all of us, he wasn’t well; that’s all we knew, we thought we should bring him some drugs, because he probably hadn’t had any for days!”

Bowie and Iggy relocated their lives to West Berlin with the hopes of Iggy getting clean, which he did.

Speaking back in 2017, Iggy revealed he doesn’t miss his life of substance abuse, telling Rolling Stone magazine: “I’ve had a wonderful relationship with my body late in life, even the thought of smoking weed gives me the creeps.”

Speaking about whether drugs should be decriminalised, he went on to say: “I’m not well-informed enough to answer that question, but I am curious about the idea that use and abuse might decline if they were legal.”

Iggy, who has been clean for several years, received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in January 2020 after more than forty years in the entertainment industry.
