Dr Hilary Jones slams government's Christmas plans as 'crazy' in savage takedown

Dr Hilary Jones was quick to knock the UK government’s alleged Christmas proposal on Monday’s Lorraine, branding recent announcements as “crazy”.

Chatting with host Lorraine Kelly, Dr Hilary discussed rumours the government were considering loosening the lockdown restrictions for five days over the Christmas break, permitting four separate families to gather together.

The alleged hiatus is reportedly planned to take place throughout the period between Christmas Eve right through to Bank Holiday Monday.

However, Dr Hilary suggested the plan was “crazy,” pointing out four different families could rack up to tens of dinner guests over the festive season.

Dr Hilary claimed the idea “of four households coming together” to enjoy everything from Christmas dinner to seasonal cocktails is “crazy”.

He continued: “Four households could be 30, 40 people.

“That is madness in my book because it means they can transmit the virus.”

Disappointed by the turn of events, he added: “I think we’ve become a very impatient population.”

The MBE confessed he feared the decision could “undo all the good work” the nation had done during the most recent lockdown, suggesting the country could be “back to square one” in the fight against Covid.

He said: “If we have learnt anything in the last year it is that when people gather together, the virus is transmitted. It gives you not just one peak, in the spring, it gives you a second peak in the autumn.

“If we undo all the good work that we’ve achieved, with most people being very sensible and responsible, we’ll have another peak in the spring.

“So why are we sacrificing all the good work that’s been done so that large households can come together for a few days, undo all the good work, and we’re back to square one before we roll out a vaccine.”

Nodding in agreement, Lorraine added: “My worry is though that the rules aren’t going to be clear.”

Bringing the segment to an end, Lorraine praised Dr Hilary’s no-nonsense approach to the virus, saying: “Hilary Jones as always on the ball, talking sense.”

Aware he had delivered some disappointing news to some, Dr Hilary replied: “I don’t want to be a killjoy.”

Lorraine airs on weekdays at 9am on ITV.
