GBBO Peter tipped to become show's youngest ever winner beating Dave and Laura

Peter Sawkins is tipped to win this year’s The Great British Bake Off, after nine glittering weeks in the GBBO tent.

The 20-year-old student is facing armoured guard Dave and digital manager Laura in the final, having successfully made it through patisserie week.

Teasing the finale to come, Channel 4 released a glimpse of the results, showing the trio baking a dazzling tiered show-stopper before Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith.

According to Coral Bookmakers, the odds of a victory are stacked in Peter’s favour, tipping the youngster as their evens favourite for the competition.

Coral’s John Hill said: “Peter has consistently delivered throughout the series this year so we think he is the one to beat in the final.

“The judges can only go off what the contestants deliver in the final and both Laura and David are capable bakers so they must not be underestimated.”

Following closely behind, Laura’s odds are at 2:1, while David is predicted to land in third place with odds of just 4:1.

Hailing from Edinburgh, Peter, who is studying accounting and finance, was an instant hit with the judges thanks to his methodical baking style and his quirky turns of phrase.

The youngest contestant in the competition, Peter was inspired to start baking after first watching the series at the age of 12.

Judge Paul has been impressed by his determination in the competition, previously offering him a coveted Hollywood Handshake before the cameras.

He remarked: “For such a young head you seem to operate at such a different level.”

Attributing GBBO with his success, Peter said: “It genuinely has been shows like Bake Off. I mean, Bake Off’s been around for more than half my life now.”

Ahead of his debut in the competition, Peter was open about his strong points – and his weaknesses – when it comes to whipping up tarts and treacle fancies.

He said: “My strengths are time management and planning. My weaknesses are artistic decoration and bread baking.”

Gravesend-born Laura, who began baking at the age of eight, is the opposite, admitting to struggling with “finesse” when it comes to her bakes.

She said: “I bake from the heart and love making things that pack a punch in terms of flavour. Finesse and refinement are not always my strong point.”

Meanwhile, fellow rival Dave has also discussed his positives and negatives in the kitchen, citing his determination as one of his winning qualities.

He said: “My strengths are the ability to learn from mistakes, take criticism and use it to improve. I am incredibly determined and see the positive in every situation.

“Weaknesses would be feeling overwhelmed when mess builds up and struggling with some baking jargon…. And French words!”

Will Peter claim the GBBO trophy – or could Dave and Laura swoop in for a surprise victory?

The Great British Bake Off airs at 8pm tonight on Channel 4
