I'm a Celeb fans praise Victoria Derbyshire as she opens up about breast cancer

On tonight’s I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! highlights show, journalist and broadcaster Victoria Derbyshire opened up to former EastEnders star Jessica Plummer about her previous cancer battle.

The pair had an honest and moving chat in camp.

Victoria, 52, and Jessica, 28, were in the bathroom, with Jess pumping the water as the journalist showered, when the conversation took place.

Jess turned to Victoria and said: “So you know like you had breast cancer, did you have to have a mastectomy?”

Victoria revealed she had, to which Jess asked: “Did you have health insurance?”

Victoria responded: “No the NHS. Amazing.

“NHS are superb. They saved my life. They saved my life, you know.”

Victoria opened up on tonight’s show

Victoria explained: “Jess was pumping the water for me in the shower and she just started asking me lots of really frank and open questions about my breast cancer diagnosis.”

Jess then asked Victoria how she found out that she had cancer.

“So I was going to bed on a Sunday night and getting undressed in the bathroom, I think I;d had a bath, and I just looked in the mirror and my right breast was about two inches lower than my left,” Victoria shared.

Victoria and Jessica shared an honest discussion

Jess then told Victoria that she has a boob which is lower than the other one.

Reassuring Jess, Victoria said: “Do not worry. Has it always been like that?”

Jess told her that it’s been like that for “a long time”.

Victoria continued: “So that’s your normal. I knew that wasn’t how I normally looked.

Not only that, the nipple had become inverted so it was as though someone was pulling it backwards, do you know what I mean? Honestly, I thought, oh, that looks weird, oh, I’ll just sort that tomorrow.

“I did not think anything. I didn’t.”

Victoria was praised for the frank chat

Victoria then spoke about how her husband reacted to her heartbreaking diagnosis in 2015.

Opening up, she said: “We could barely speak, you know. We could barely speak to each other. We are talkers, we are open, we are you know, and we just had no words because honestly all I was thinking was I’m going to die.

“Seriously, I’m going to die. And then, I thought I’m not going to see my boys grow up, I’m not going to grow old with Mark, I mean it was just, I just thought my luck’s run out, you know.”

Victoria, who is now cancer-free, thanked Jessica for asking her such “sensitive” questions, as she spoke about the importance of making sure to take notice of any changes to your breasts, noting how in her case “It wasn’t a lump. It was like, how would I describe it, if you had loads of string all messed up it was like that, sort of long bits, it was all over the place.

“It wasn’t a solid lump which is why you need all that chemo and then targeted radiotherapy.”

Victoria was praised by I’m a Celebrity viewers for being so open and honest.

One social networker said: “Victoria being so honest and open about her breast cancer is so touching and has me in my feels. I know it was able to educate people and make a difference #ImACeleb #imacelebrity.”

While another continued: “Thank you, Jess, for asking Victoria about her breast cancer, and thank you, Victoria, for being so open and honest. Your frank conversation was so enlightening. #ImACeleb #imacelebrity”

A third added: “i wish we heard more from victoria and jess then, it’s a really important convo and so many people are watching #ImACeleb #imacelebrity.”
