Kate Garraway feels 'physically sick' at thought of Christmas without Derek

Kate Garraway has opened up about how the thought of celebrating Christmas without Derek Draper makes her feel “physically sick”.

The 53-year-old Good Morning Britain presenter’s husband Derek is in hospital recovering after he contracted a serious strain of coronavirus.

Kate and children Darcey and Billy could spend Christmas without Derek if lockdown restrictions stay in place.

Referring to government restrictions potentially staying in place, the television host explained: “I feel physically sick actually and can feel my chest tightening at the thought of it.

“I’m in total panic about the idea of me, Darcey and Billy on our own this Christmas unable to visit Derek because of potential restrictions.

“That huge emotional hole, and I don’t know how to fill it, without grandparents and without friends helping to fill it.

“It feels like such a significant moment as all festivals are. I do feel in a panic about it, but we’re in this situation because of the spread of a disease that at the moment doesn’t have a cure.”

Derek was hospitalised with Covid-19 in March and was left in a coma, and Kate has updated fans regularly about his condition.

The virus had a serious impacted his body and has left him with complications he is still battling.

Earlier this month, Kate revealed her beloved family car had been stolen, and she discussed the heartbreaking ordeal with co-star and good pal Ben Shephard.

She said she was “blown away” by the amount of support she’s received from viewers, but hasn’t had time to reply to everyone after Derek’s “tough old week”.

Kate explained:”They’ve been unbelievably nice, and it’s been a bit of a tough old week for Derek so I haven’t got back to anybody.

“But it’s so lovely – some viewers are offering to lend me their cars.

“I am constantly blown away by how lovely you’ve all been through this.”

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
