Oxford coronavirus vaccine tester describes 'side effects' on Lorraine

Lorraine Kelly quizzed a volunteer for the Oxford coronavirus vaccine trial on Monday’s show, asking him about the injection’s potential side effects.

Having been developed over the course of the year, scientists revealed on Monday the Oxford vaccine is thought to have 70% efficacy.

Calling in from Shropshire, the volunteer, whose name was Jack Sommers, admitted he hadn’t experienced many side effects after undergoing the trial.

Jack – who lost his job during the lockdown – admitted he had suffered a slight pain in his shoulder, though wasn’t sure whether that was due to the vaccine.

He admitted: “I think I had like a slight pain in my shoulder.”

Jack pointed out the pain could be the result of the vaccine, the placebo, or something else entirely, as he added: “It’s basically like having a holiday jab.”

Assuring fans they had no cause to worry, he added that he hadn’t suffered any “X-Men style transformation” after undergoing the trial.

Dr Hilary Jones was quick to thank Jack for his selflessness, saying: “I think what you’ve done is absolutely fantastic. Without people like you, we couldn’t have these trials and we couldn’t get where we are now, so thank you.”

“This is going to make such a difference to millions of people, so thank you,” he added.

Meanwhile, over on Twitter, viewers were quick to praise Jack’s heroism in taking part in the trial, thanking him for his bravery in fighting against the pandemic.

One said: “#Lorraine vaccine trials are heroic, take a bow and hopefully you will be rewarded. Thanks Jack and all those that paved the way for our future safety!”

“@lorraine how lovely was Jack from Shropshire! What a sweetheart. Without these volunteers we’d never get a vaccine so hats off to all of them,” wrote a second.

“What a great guy! So good on the telly aswell. Make him a presenter on TV,” added a third.
