Paul Mescal hails secret girlfriend a 'lifesaver' after meteoric rise to fame

Paul Mescal has revealed for the first time that he has found love since becoming an international name.

The actor, who found fame on BBC’s Normal People – a show which set the world alight in a matter of hours – has been linked to several women since the hit first aired in April 2020.

Now, the Maynooth-born hunk has revealed that he has secretly been dating while keeping his girlfriend away from his public life.

Paul, 24, couldn’t help but gush over his love during an interview with GQ Magazine as he credited her for helping him through the recent lockdown period.

Speaking to the publication, he said his love is a “lifesaver”.

“To have someone to lean on through such a mad, mad time has been invaluable, really, I don’t know where I’d be without her,” he gushed.

Paul was instantly a fan favourite when Normal People landed on BBC iPlayer in the midst of the coronavirus lockdown. Soon he was seeing photographers capture his every move, including outings in his famous short shorts.

Speaking about his rapid rise to fame, the star said: “Very, very quickly, pretty much overnight, there were people following me to the shops with cameras.

“At first you think, ‘Oh, this is a bit glamorous,’ when someone is taking a picture of you buying ready-to-eat avocados and cigarettes at the off-licence, but soon enough you feel it begin to infiltrate your brain.”

Paul is currently gearing up to celebrate his first feature film starring alongside Olivia Colman and Dakota Johnson in an adaptation of The Lost Daughter.

He went on to admit that he was left in awe after watching the 2017 coming of age film, Call Me By Your Name.

He said: ” Timothée Chalamet just smashed it in that movie, he blew my mind, if I’m honest with you – I was so moved by it, it sort of shocked me.

“He is on another level and it just made me realise what a young actor, roughly the same age as me, could be capable of, the level I had to get up to.

“I very clearly remember leaving the cinema absolutely terrified by Chalamet’s performance.”

The actor recalled having a boozy reunion with Normal People co-star Daisy Edgar-Jones as they enjoyed playing a drinking game.

Paul and Daisy took a shot of their preferred liquor if his character, Connell, failed to complete a sentence or if Daisy’s character Marianne would make a bold statement that left Connell feeling flustered.

Mescal is to receive the Hugo Boss Breakthrough Actor of the Year award at the GQ Men of the Year Awards 2020.
