Strictly fans claim Maisie Smith's confidence keeps landing her in bottom two

Strictly Come Dancing star Maisie Smith has landed in the bottom two for two weekends running – and fans of the show think they know why.

Watching Sunday night’s elimination, which saw actress Caroline Quentin go home after a tense dance-off, BBC One fans claimed Maisie’s confidence was the reason she was losing votes.

The EastEnders actress had nearly topped the leaderboard with her professional partner Gorka Márquez after the pair wowed the judges with their salsa to the song Better When I’m Dancing.

Racking up the points from the judging panel, their only downfall was a misstep during a flip, with Gorka apologising for Maisie’s awkward landing after he turned her over too quickly.

Awarded 27 points in total, the dance duo were trumped only by Made In Chelsea star Jamie Laing and his pro choreographer Karen Hauer.

However, despite a stellar performance, Maisie still received the lowest number of votes from viewers – meaning she had to dance to keep her spot in the Strictly rankings.

Watching from home, certain angry viewers claimed Maisie had been under threat due to her dazzling confidence, suggesting certain fans of the show were threatened by her outgoing personality.

One Twitter user said: “Maisie in the dance off again what the f***???? the public clearly don’t like young confident women and it shows!!”

“The UK hates confident women confirmed,” wrote a second.

And a third penned: “If Maisie is in the dance off again it just proves my point that UK audiences don’t like confident young women.”

After their dance-off, the judges were convinced Maisie and Gorka were the worthier champions and Caroline and her partner Johannes Radebe were sent packing.

The pair’s humorous take on the Cha-Cha-Cha went down a treat with judges, as they performed a comedy sketch in tune to the hit song Rescue Me.

Despite earning an impressive 24 points, Anton Du Beke, Craig Revel Horwood, and Shirley Ballas decided they wanted to save Maisie and Gorka for the next stage of the competition.

Justifying his decision, Anton said: “Well, I thought both couples danced beautifully.

“I think they are beautiful couples who danced fabulous routines.

“One couple was a bit cleaner than the other couple, there were a couple of mistakes in there.

“So the couple I would like to save is Maisie and Gorka.”

Crag was in agreement, and added: “I absolutely love both couples, but for me, one couple was outstanding and danced as though their lives depended on it and that couple I would like to save, Maisie and Gorka.”

Strictly Come Dancing continues on BBC One on Saturday at 7.15pm.
