BBC confirm EastEnders will go off-air for 2 months but launches spinoff series

Bosses at EastEnders have announced that they will be airing a string of special episodes before the hit soap opera looks set to vanish from screens for two months.

EastEnders will be taking a break with the last episode airing on June 16th, before filming resumes again later this month.

The set of the soap bases in the fictional Walford neighbourhood was forced to close down in March due to the coronavirus lockdown with only two episodes airing each week in a bid to keep it on screens for as long as possible.

However, all is not lost as EastEnders: Secrets From The Square will burst onto screens on June 22, offering fans the chance to revisit some iconic scenes.

BBC favourite Stacey Dooley is set to front the show and will be joined by several cast members who will offer an insight into the show with exclusive secrets and what it’s like playing their character.

Stacey will sit with cat members in Ian Beale and Max Branning’s restaurant, Walford East, on a Monday evening as they give hints about what’s to come when EastEnders returns to screens with regular episodes.

Cast members including Letitia Dean and Danny Dyer will also have the chance to see their first memories after rocking up on the Square.

Executive Producer, Jon Sen said: “Although the drama from Albert Square will be off our screens for a short time, we are thrilled that fans will have a unique opportunity to see from the cast themselves just what it is like to be part of EastEnders when they see Secrets From The Square.

“As the cast look back – as well as forward – we can relive some of their most memorable moments and to add a selection of iconic episodes into the mix means viewers will be able to get their regular Walford fix until the drama returns.”

Kate Phillips, Controller of BBC Entertainment went on to say: “EastEnders has been at the heart of BBC One since its inception 35 years ago.

“While going off-air was never in their plan, we and the EastEnders team knew straight away that this would be the perfect opportunity to celebrate the show, look back on cherished memories of all those momentous episodes whilst taking a look around Albert Square and they may just give us some teasers as to what’’s to come when they return.”

EastEnders airs Monday and Tuesday nights on BBC One at 7.30pm, with the special episodes airing from Monday, June 22nd.
