DJ Steve 'Smooth' Sutherland dies as tributes pour in

Tributes are pouring in for DJ Steve Sutherland, after his death was confirmed this afternoon (Friday).

The news broke on Twitter, with singer and songwriter Gemma Fox tweeting: “RIP Mr Steve Sutherland. This really saddens me and is not only an incredible loss, but yet another incredible loss for the music industry. Thank you for everything you did for me and my musical journey. RIP Steve.”

It is not yet known what the cause of his death was.

Steve is one of the most successful urban DJs in the country, with a career that has spanned more than 10 years.

He has released 12 studio albums, with seven breaking into the Top 40 compilations charts in the UK.

Steve also won four MOBO Awards during his life.

They were for Best Club DJ in 2000 and 2004, and Best Club & Radio DJ in 2002 and 2006.

He was also nominated for a number of other awards spanning between 2001 and 2009.

Trevor Nelson is among the people in the entertainment industry paying tribute.

He tweeted: “Just hear the sad news of another great loss to British black music. Condolences to the family of Steve Sutherland who I first met and worked with at the Kensington Roof Gardens 30 years ago.”

The MOBO Awards shared a post too, which read: “We are deeply saddened to hear the news of DJ Steve Sutherland’s passing. His contribution to the black British music scene will never be forgotten.”

Steve got his big break in radio by former BBC Radio 1 producer Ivor Etienne, who dubbed him Steve “Smooth” Sutherland.

He went on to enjoy a 9pm to 1am show on Galaxy FM, which became one of the most popular shows in the UK, broadcast across all of the radio station’s network.

Over the course of his career, Steve welcomed interview guests including Mariah Carey, Jay-Z, 50 Cent, Kanye West, Alicia Keys, Mark Ronson, Janet Jackson and Beyonce among many others.
